I put Breaking Benjamin in the same boat that I put Three Days Grace in the sense that I never dislike any of the singles, but I'm always expecting not to like whatever's coming next. I would say that between those two, I prefer 3DG since their songs just seem catchier, and therefore, more memorable to me. Whereas Breaking Benjamin's songs are memorable just on the basis of having them beaten into my head so many times. But I'm splitting hairs; I don't really care too much for either of them. Once again, this is exactly how I feel. We're twins! Seriously, what bands actually make original music nowadays anyway? Well, I'll gladly tell you which bands don't make the epitome of generic modern rock: My Chemical Romance Incubus Tool The Killers AFI Red Hot Chili Peppers 30 Seconds to Mars Raconteurs Deftones OK Go Muse Angels & Airwaves Gnarls Barkley Say Anything Panic! at the Disco Beck Shiny Toy Guns U2 Sparta The Shins These are arguable: Stone Sour Evanescence Snow Patrol +44 Blue October Taking Back Sunday Pepper Audioslave Wolfmother Kill Hannah Pete Yorn Rise Against Note the names I left off: The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus Three Days Grace Hinder Papa Roach Disturbed Plain White T's Army of Anyone Jet Shinedown Saosin Flyleaf Bullet for My Valentine well i have mixed feelings about this. some you listed are incorrect. like Nickleback is very generic. when they first made it big, they sounded like puddle of mud, 3 doors down. i dont like +44 but they are some ex members of blink 182 who happened to be the kings of punk. +44 is just carrying that on i believe, so wouldnt they be orignal? now i dont even like them, or have listened to them that much, so i could be wrong. Saosin, Red jumsuit, definetly generic... any screamo or emo band is generic anymore. ironic though, emo started as anit-conformity. now they are all alike, and pretty much own the the indie market... i have to dissagree with you about flyleaf, they have a very original sound, when is the last time a Gold album, hard rocking, chick singing band has done this well on rock radio? i think they're sound is original.

I think I exaggerated my quote somewhat the other night to get my point across. My point was that very few bands today make completely original music in which it is almost impossible to hear any *previous* work in their material. I think penance's citation of the Mars Volta is a perfect example of a band that I believe makes almost entirely original material. But in 2006, it is becoming more and more difficult to do so.
Actually, a large majority of the bands Nicholas mentioned are really in question. I would in no way call AVA, OK Go, The Killers, AFI, or even RHCP entirely original. They're all to different degrees, of course.
I would imagine my ultimate point from my previous post was that, in this day in age especially, originality and cliche are too completely different meanings. And there's nothing wrong with a band like Breaking Benjamin, who don't exactly set the world on fire by revolutionizing rock music, but, much like the Fray for example, are talented and interesting to listen to. Their songs are angsty, but melodic enough to catch my attention and make me a fan.

...Well, I'm a sucker for Nickelback. There, I said it. Hypocrite. Okay, not really, but don't you think it's weird that you're perfectly okay with one completely generic band and yet you're calling out a couple of (IMO) equally good generic bands for being generic? It doesn't really sound to me like you dislike them for being generic at all, because obviously some generic bands appeal to you.

The term "Generic" and the concept of acts sounding "similar" is relative. For example, for someone new to both acts, one might claim that The Futureheads and Bloc Party are "same-ish". There's validity to that observation: both are revivalists of the Gang of Four-informed sound, both make angular, politically charged pop, and both arrived on the UK circuit at (roughly) the same time. That being said, further listening/exploration reveals a lot of differences between the two acts. Bloc Party often lessen the tension of their music and play with atmospheric, dreamy walls of guitar layering (especially on their new album); Futureheads almost never strayed from the extremely tight, sharp attack of their erratic punk (let's forget about the new album for a second, which sucks because they went all soft). This is relevant to the topic of radio acts obviously, because while both Nickelback and Crossfade and, whatever, let's say, BB are arguably generic (which I agree with), to people who actually listen to those acts, the claim would probably be that there are mild subtleties differentiating them. They might all fall close together on the 2000's modern rock spectrum, but there is some "degree" or "shade" of difference that keeps them from being completely interchangeable. I personally DO find it hard to make those distinctions, because from all the evidence I've been witness to (aka several singles from each band), there isn't a whole lot of discernable difference (even between each band's own singles!). But perhaps someone who finds the mutual sound more favorable would be able to discuss what makes each act unique & worthy on an individual basis. I would assume someone out there would at least try to argue that there is something original about each act. Right?

I definately disagree too concerning claims that Flyleaf don't make original music...and not just because I happen to be a huge fan but because I find them to have many elements in their music that set them apart (harmonized guitar work and vocals to name a few). At least with Breaking Benjamin their originality is argueable, although I side in their favor.

They're all to different degrees, of course. I don't think his point was even that all of those were ground-breaking; he's just saying that none of those artists make faceless music. True, the Killers aren't the most original, but at least when you hear a song of theirs, it isn't interchangable with a lot of other artists. Also, I didn't see anywhere where he said Nickelback wasn't generic. It's not always a bad thing, but usually not a great thing.

Yes, "finally" is the operative word. I suppose it was better to wait, though, than have it suffer the horrific fate of 10 Years' "Through the Iris".

The difference is that Breaking Benjamin is very radio-friendly hard rock...to be honest I don't even know how "Wastland" was the huge success it was, although a great song it didn't have a strong hook.

I completely disagree with that statement. In fact, I'll go as far as to say it is the hookiest song on the whole album.

I think you misunderstood me..."Wastland" is definately the hookiest song I've heard from them (I've heard the other two singles and the album title track) but the others have even less of a hook in my opinion. In fact, even though I like the band, I think their biggest weakness is the lack of catchiness to any of their songs without repeated listens.

Well you could (and we have) argue the same for Tool, who seems to be their greatest influence.

Waking Up was the weaker of the 3. but the rest of their album never caught on.

It's getting lot of adds surprisingly! Hopefully it'll be bigger than "Diary of Jane" (even though I love that song too)

But they're not that big on the Alternative chart usually, and they're getting lots of adds there. I've never heard them on our 2 alternative stations here and hardly hear them on our active rock station. That's why it's surprising to me I guess.

Dang, on the Alternative chart, it moved up 10 spots to #27 in its second week! They better play it on 91X here in San Diego or I'll be mad.

Top 10 on alternative without a video and it's the second single off of the album. Impressive.
