Somebody said that stations that broadcast a certain sports team are required to play the commercials for places in the sports team's market, which made an affiliate complain that they have to play commercials for places in a different market. Should the affiliates take the flagship station to court? When I listen to the Yankees in Binghamton, I don't remember ever hearing New York City commercials. T-Ray (now ct-something) is mad enough that the Yankees are on the radio in Tampa Bay, he would be even more mad if New York City commercials were on in Tampa Bay.

First of all, Evan, my colleague, who's originally from Tallahassee, says the reason they have it like that is this: George Steinbrenner OWNS that station and he's a Tampa Bay native, who as we all know, owns the Yankees (no, he does not work for him, mind you). Therefore, whenever he wants to go to Tampa for a vacation or something, he listens to his Yankees on his station there. That way he can keep tabs on what goes on at Yankee stadium or when they are on the road.
As far as commercials, that's his angle. He has the authority to omit those spots from New York and replace them with the local spots or whatever he can fill with. If it were with a different company, it should never happen. Therefore if it did, it's a lawsuit waiting to happen. To put it in a nutshell, it's his station. I mean he would've put other sports events on the air like the Marlins or the Buccanneers. But I feel for T-Ray who has complained about this and that if it were owned by a different company, they could broadcast all of the pro sports on Florida networks and never had to worry about Steinbrenner hogging his team on a Florida station. But then again, George would be there forever until his existance ceases from this Earth.

Back in SoCal, almost every commercial I heard during the Raiders broadcast on XTRA Sports was a Bay Area commercial since the flagship station is KNBR.

To clarify a couple of points from earlier in this topic, Steinbrenner isn't a native of Tampa (he's originally from Columbus, which is why the Yanks' AAA club is there), but he has been here for at least 25 years. May have been one of the backing businessmen in getting the Bucs to come to existence, but I'm not sure. As for NYC commercials, they do run on Yankee telecasts (I think the Tri-State GMC dealers may have been one of them). Unless I'm mistaken, Steinbrenner doesn't own WQYK, they're owned by Infinity. I think the reason that the station still airs Yankee games in spite of the presence (or should I say lack thereof) of the Devil Rays is that the now-called Sports Asylum has been so desparate for ratings that they have to resort to this to try to put a dent on The Sports Animal and WFLA (Rays' flagship), and still, despite airing the Bucs, cannot get the job done, although it may change a little when it becomes all-ESPN Radio this winter.
