Its only for Active Rock. They're sending the slower song to Alternative.

Doesn't matter what they do now. The album is done.

It's my favorite song on the album, but WHAT ARE THEY NUTS?!?!??
Why scrap the crossover song, especially now, when their album sales absolutely suck compared to other releases released at about that time?

I'm sure they're in slight panic-mode at this point, because not even I anticipated "Put Your Money..." to be dropping at the rate it has in the last three weeks, with an almost consistent -300 even down into the upper 30's.
With the Active Rock and Alternative formats so similar anyway, why would they bother pushing two different singles at each of those formats?
They should have planned a second single before the album was even released. Now it might be too late to re-capture the momentum they had with the success of Get Born. If they can pull a crossover and a top 15 at alternative, that would be a definite success at this point.

The problem is, "Shine On" as a whole just isn't nearly as immediate as "Get Born" as a whole. No single track is as hook-driven as "Are You Gonna Be My Girl" or "Cold Hard B****".
Although this particular track has some heavy guitar licks that drive the song more or less, even this track has more density than the radio-ready tracks from "Get Born" and, though I like the track, it sounds all over the place, where first you hear some heavy riffs, then you come to breaks twinkling with piano, then a challenging bridge with yet another change in pace, from distortion sounds to playing at a higher key.
"Shine On" is going to underperform for the same reason at Alternative; it's a song that is easily likeable, but it falls victim to the band's commendable efforts to stretch to greater limits and importance with their music, thus struggling to blend their experimentations into their radio-single formula.
Sincerely, Noah Eaton
