This is the first single from their upcoming sixth album called Alpha, which will be released on March 6th through a partnership between Sevendust's own 7Bros. and Warner's Asylum Records division. The song can currently be heard on Sevendust's official website.
I'm really impressed with this song. It's way heavier a kickoff single than Ugly, and it actually compares to the material from Home and the heavier side of Animosity. I really hope this is an indication of where the new album is going. I really like Sevendust and I'm so happy a new album is coming so soon.

That song is awesome especially the three minute mark...it sounds like some sort of concept record.

This is really what I wanted to hear from Sevendust. It's one of the hardest songs I've heard from them, but I think their career on radio is basically done. That's alright since I think they do have a very large fanbase that couldn't care less about how successful they're doing corporate-wise. Just look at Underoath as an example.

They still play the old stuff on my local radio stations, but I haven't heard the new one yet. Is the single available at Real Player yet? Hmm, I guess I could to Real Player and see for myself.

I've generally had mixed feelings on past Sevendust singles. I didn't like "Enemy" or "Ugly" but songs like "X-mas Day", "Praise", and the Dark New Day album were brilliant. Not to mention the Strait Up album that the members' directed several years ago. Hard to imagine Mark McGrath playing guitar alongside them, but, yes, it did happen.
Did Clint Lowery ever officially leave Sevendust? If this is a concept album, I'm listening. A title like "Deathstar" should hopefully signal good things to come!
Radio play is out of the question. If they couldn't even garner top 20 success with "Enemy", it'll never happen. I'm actually stunned they've maintained this much longevity to begin with, to be honest.

It's not that hard to imagine Mark McGrath appearing on that album when you consider Sugar Ray's album Floored. That is one heavy album. It's really weird to look at Sugar Ray's career and realize that they were once in the same genre as Korn and Limp Bizkit. Clint Lowery not only left Sevendust a long time ago for Dark New Day, but he was replaced with ex-Snot member Sonny Mayo. In fact, I'm pretty sure the song called "The Last Song" on Next is about Clint. The lyrics make it really hard to imagine it being about anyone else. I don't think the band really cared for his sudden departure. Finally, "Enemy" was a crap song that should've never been released. It was a bloated and unnecessary rant against Dez Farara, and it's disappointing that it was released to radio ahead of "Face To Face" and instead of "Seasons" or "Gone".

True, but that was in 2001, if I recall correctly - after 14:59 and their fourth album (can't remember the title, the one with "When It's Over") was released. That would be the equivalent to Scott Stapp appearing on a Sevendust album in 2003.
Yeah, but I've actually listened to Floored several times through (I own it), and I've even listened to a few tracks off Lemonade & Brownies. It's more like speed-punk, maybe like Limp Bizkit meets the Offspring. Even 14:59 had some heavier tunes, like "Aim For Me".
And about Clint leaving the band, man, I'm behind the times on that one.

Though I never heard those other songs, I agree 100% about "Enemy." That would be the equivalent to Scott Stapp appearing on a Sevendust album in 2003. Look they ran in the same circles, and if Mark was a good friend of Lynn's back in '98 and before, why the hell shouldn't he contribute to a tribute album in his honor? I mean, Sugar Ray never took themselves that seriously to begin with (e.g., "Danzig Needs a Hug," "Big Black Woman") and were obviously willing to be corporate whores to make a lot of cash. I mean, that was pretty obvious when they came back with 14:59, musically and titularly.

That's fine. I liked Mark McGrath and the band in 6th and 7th grade. Unfortunately, especially with later singles that bombed, they took their, shall we say, "light-heartedness" a little too far.

Well, even though I never really liked the last Sugar Ray album, I get what they were going for. They wanted to take the sounds of all the old 70s and 80s pop bands that they really liked and mix them all together. I think they succeeded in creating a really summery kind of album. Unfortunately in doing so they lost any kind of rock edge that 14:59 and the self-titled maintained.

I got the impression they were trying to make a dancier, poppier record, with or without pressure from suits who took notice of No Doubt's smash "comeback" success with Rock Steady.

I got the impression they were trying to make a dancier, poppier record, with or without pressure from suits who took notice of No Doubt's smash "comeback" success with Rock Steady. You know, it's been a long time since I actually listened to In The Pursuit of Leisure, and I never picked up on the abundance of beats on the album. Aside from only a couple tracks, there's beats present on everything. How utterly odd. I don't think it has a whole lot to do with No Doubt though, just because all I've heard the band say about the album seems to suggest that they just wanted to make a retro-pop record (I mean, they covered "Is She Really Going Out With Him" on the same album). I don't really think label suits suggested to Sugar Ray to change their sound to be like No Doubt. I know Sugar Ray's pretty indebted to their ability to sell out, but I don't think anything off of Leisure is too far removed from the songs that made them successful to begin with.

The only song I remember is "Mr. Bartender," and when I heard that, the first thing that popped into my mind was, "Well this is definitely a dancier 'club' song, like No Doubt's 'Hey Baby' was." Obviously they wouldn't admit any personal inspiration from a successful No Doubt record, nor would they admit to any label pressure, but I'm just curious if the label ever discussed the success of Rock Steady with them, if for no other reason than "Mr. Bartender."

Either way, they would have made the right decision.

This song is now available on their MySpace along with the aforementioned "Deathstar". I think this is a really great song. A good merging of the heavier Sevendust of old with the melodic side of Animosity and Seasons. I really hope that they manage to reclaim their former success.

This new song is freaking awesome. Deathstar is very similar in sound, but I think they made the right choice by changing it to Driven, since its a little more radio friendly. Either way, both songs just plain old kick ass. I could definitely see this blowing up on Active Rock but Alternative probably won't give it much of the light of day, which I don't understand since it sounds to me like a little bit harder Disturbed.

I've had probably over 10-15 chances to see Sevendust, but for some reason there's always some reason I never get to go. I will make it my business to see them before their careers end though somehow.

www.sevendust.infoYou can hear three tracks from the album...Driven, Deathstar, and the title track. Alpha reminds me quite a bit of "B****".

This album did a lot better than I expected. Almost 50,000 copies sold first week and they reached #14 on the charts. It's great to see that Sevendust can still pull those kinds of numbers even being out of the spotlight like they are.

I preordered it, but I feel like I got ripped because I didn't get anything exclusive...guess I'll have to buy the album again

It's just amazing that Sevendust keep releasing singles and they continue to do moderately well on Alternative and Active Rock radio. This has always been a band that I've felt has the capability to produce some really hard-rocking, yet *moving* music...but for whatever reason, haven't done on all their singles. With songs like "Ugly" and "Enemy", they sound so desperate to just want to score a mega-smash on the rock formats. They need to stick to what they do best, which is produce some complicated, high-quality music mixed in with a ballad like "X-Mas Day".

That is pretty good sells for Sevendust. I find that I am stuck on the first the songs on the album and the rest just blends together. I will say that I haven't just sat and listened to the rest but I plan to soon. Maybe the blending will change.

I find that I am stuck on the first the songs on the album and the rest just blends together. That's how I think of EVERY Sevendust album. However, this new album freaking ROCKS my socks. Man, I can't wait to blast it in my car with the windows down and scare all the rednecks listening to country music around here
