The cover of the PCD song. In support of their Tu Mi Piaci EP, left-leaning stations have given this menacingly psychotic cover a few spins, mainly for the sake of invoking a reaction from the flighty public. Xiu Xiu has plenty of nutty tunes, but this cover is one of the eeriest, coolest, most f**ked up things I've heard in awhile: Stream it here.If anyone wants it, I can upload it for them. They also have a good Bauhaus cover on this EP ("All We Ever Wanted Was Everything").

That was scary. It sounds like snuff film or torture music.

I don't know about amazing, but it was pretty cool. I was reminded of this tonight as I saw a movie preview in the theater where Eddie Murphy's upcoming movie where he puts on lots of skin makeup to play all the main characters again, including a severely obese woman (heeyyyy...Eddie Lawrence plays a fat woman again. I ask you, what's more hilarious than that? ). Anyway, the Dolls' version was playing in the background and hearing this now just makes me so f***ing happy that whatever exposure the Dolls or Xiu Xiu gain with this song, Cee-Lo is the one laughing all the way to the bank with his royalty checks. When Tortuga described this as "snuff film music," I had to take a listen. While I didn't find it particularly creepy, it was a cool listen. With me, it evoked something that the Aphex Twin would have possibly done with it.

here it isto me, it=amazing because it sounds like something born from my own subconscious. Since I'm doing my Top 60 albums soon, I'll include this little note (I guess now I've let one of sixty cats out the bag! ) "Xiu Xiu's music is the soundtrack to a human being becoming completely unhinged. They always write about the most disturbing topics they can fathom: rape, murder, abuse are all quite common themes. Yet, unlike the trite approach many might take here - exploitation & shock-horror gimmickry- Xiu Xiu instead internalize the agony of these experiences into a sonic capacity that seems too ungodly and relentless to confront for long. Their version of "doom" discomfits in a way a Cannibal Corpse song could not. The music sounds horrible. It ceaselessly conjures diabolical atmospherics with little to no suggestion of irony or any indication that this is an inclusive performance. Their intent is malicious and you have to be willing to play their victim to appreciate the genius of their unearthly squeals and drones. Indulgent? Of course. But no other act on the planet successfully engages in such destructive play with their listeners."
