Again, off topic. Again, very much in the spirit of Subterranean. Again, a Stylus feature on the YouTube/ITube/WeTube column. This week: Techno Videos 2003-Present. It's a chance many of you have of hearing music that definitely doesn't - and in 99,5% of cases, won't EVER get - any kind of mainstream exposure, even in niche slots. And more important than that, here's some of the music I think has been pushing the boundaries of sound and structure in the last few years. Step inside... if you think you're man/woman enough!

I'm posting this as my source for these playlists has decided to eliminate their inclusion out of frustration with the format change. I don't really blame them, but I will miss being able to keep up with the playlists when I myself am unavailable to watch the show at 1am (aka the past two weeks). :( SUBTERRANEAN & ALL MTV2 SHOWS NOW VJ-LESSMTV2 abandons VJs February 24, 2007 altmusictv has learned MTV2 is abandoning the concept of VJ-hosted shows, opting instead for a straight-up video block format. Subterranean, Headbangers Ball, Sucker Free, and all surviving music shows on the network will drop their hosts, voiceovers, and guests. Essentially, this means Subterranean as we know it is gone. This week's episode from the PLUG awards will be the last one with the usual format. Subsequent episodes apparently will not feature host Jim Shearer or bands at all. I was told these changes are being made "for the forseeable future," but I'm guessing we'll never see a VJ on MTV2's music shows again. I'd say this is MTV2's way of phasing out its music shows entirely. We're witnessing the end of over 25 years of the VJ concept on MTV. The remaining staff at Subterranean have launched a blog at subterraneanblog.com, where they'll feature some new videos and encourage bands to provide tour reports and other related stuff. That blog will apparently be "the voice of Subterranean," solidifying the show's complete move to the Internet. Sounds like a great blog, but the show on TV will be "Subterranean" in name only. I doubt I'll bother to watch the show on TV anymore. It's true the lack of VJ segments will allow more time in the show for music videos, but there's no need to sit through 20 minutes of nearly unbearable commercials just to see 10 or 11 videos. When all you have is the music videos — no host, no guest, no "show" — the whole process works easier and better on the Internet. This latest move by the network is not just another blow to MTV's original concept. I'm thankful to Jim Shearer and others at MTV for supporting my site over the years, but with the show functioning as its own blog, it also renders my efforts irrelevant. Due to these changes, the future of altmusictv is unknown. The main purpose of this site for 4 years has been to provide recap of 120 Minutes and Subterranean. Now that Subterranean won't really be a show, I don't see any reason to continue providing recap. Recently, I've made an attempt to expand the content of the blog, but there isn't much alternative music on TV to talk about. Everything is moving to the Internet. Perhaps it's just a sign of the times, but it's sad to see another nail in the coffin for MTV's original concept. What do you think about MTV2's decision, and what should happen to altmusictv? If there has ever been a time to comment, it's now.

Guests On Subterranean are BACK! 03/14/2007 Excellent news - this weekend’s Subterranean will feature guest clips from Klaxons! That’s right, we got our guests back! We’re crafty like that. But, so our loyal viewers are prepared, it won’t look like it used to. The basements are gone and we don’t have Jim back yet - we only managed to get guest segments back thru some manipulation of the system (and magic). We’re working on lots of other cool guests for the future and hope to share the list with you soon!

I was too busy to update for awhile, plus the show kind of fell off the map (some of us thought it was canned), but it returned from MIA status tonight, and I watched the whole thing. I'm happy to see they are favoring lesser-known acts and electronica (at least this time around). For awhile, stuff like The Shins and Muse were being passed off as "underground". Datarock - Fa-Fa-FaBloc Party - The PrayerDntel - The DistanceKings of Leon - On CallPatrick Wolf - Accident & EmergencyBattles - AtlasThe Cinematics - Keep ForgettingNicole Atkins - Neptune City!!! - Must Be The MoonPop Levi - Pick-Me-Up UppercutI also watched most of 120 Minutes (formerly known as The Alternative on VH1 Classic) Since Subterranean is the 21st century version of 120 minutes AND the original program has been "resurrected" in a (retro) sense, maybe I can update about 120 minutes on Sundays, too. (Some) Videos that were played tonight: (sorry, not in order, but Blur & Echo were definitely the final two). The Cure - The Walk World Party - Ship of Fools Everclear - Santa Monica Oingo Boingo - Weird Science Thompson Twins - Love On Your Side Flesh For Lulu - I Go Crazy Love & Rockets - So Alive Stereo MCs - Connected Frankie Goes To Hollywood - Relax (Don't Do It) Live - Pain Lies On The Riverside Peter Murphy - All Night Long Faith No More - Epic Blur - She's So High Echo & The Bunnymen - The Killing Moon
