According to Wednesday's New York Post, K-Rock (WXRK-FM, 92.3) is switching to an all-talk format similar to what WNEW-FM did in 2000 as soon as Howard Stern moves to Sirius Satellite Radio.
Which means that New York City will no longer have a station that plays any alternative/modern rock on any kind of a regular basis.

Meh...I haven't listened to them much since they switched to "Great Rock, Period" anyway.
I wonder if they'll keep the K-Rock 2 stream online though...

Good I hate them now. Booker is the most obnoxious person ever. Although I don't really get the point of all-talk radio, but thats beside the point.

I doubt we'll have to go long before an Alternative station pops up, and hopefully it'll be an actual Alt station that caters more to NYC than to the Active Rock chart, so this could be a good thing. I expect some dead station to switch to Alternative soon, because no way could the country's biggest city and the home of a major rock scene really go long without none of the genre on the radio.

K-Rock is done. The station flips to Talk in January as 92.3 Free-FM. Music will probably continue to be heard in nights and overnights.

Booker is the most obnoxious person ever. That guy is so unbelievably annoying. I really hope he doesn't appear on whatever new station we get.

Why would Infinity think FM Talk would do well in New York City? The combined rating of WABC and WOR isn't high enough that I would recommend another Talk station and Infinity's Chicago Talk station, WCKG-FM, is tied for 24th and is the lowest rated out of the seven Infinity stations there.

I think that they shouldn't have changed a thing. I know Howard's loss was going to be humongous, but they should have kept K-Rock an active/alt mix. They were bound to take a hit after Stern left either way.

I do not get Infinity at all. Why do they think FM talk will work? Joel Hollander must be exceedingly dumb. Fortunately, I can get G-Rock on my radio at work, because NYC radio is now a virtual wasteland.

Why would Infinity think FM Talk would do well in New York City? They don't really know what they're doing, that's why.
As much as Infinity may not like Stern, his departure has them scrambling to fill the void, and their resulting efforts are so laughable that it's pathetic.
I say, good. Let a company who doesn't seem to give a damn about the format dump it to allow another company who would give a damn to fill that void.[/font]

For those who know anything about Radio X on Long Island (they just recently expanded their listening area)...does anybody know what they generally play? Is it more like K-Rock (mainstream) or more like K-Rock 2 (alternative)?

I don't listen to K-Rock that much, if you listen to rock stations, keep in mind there are a slew of rock stations around New York state. WRRV, WPDH, WDST and WXPK.

This would've been sad a year ago but since they switched formats to lighter rock it hasn't been a good station to listen to.
