Warp is very pleased to announce the return of Battles with their new album, Mirrored out May 14th 2007. Preceding what is actually their debut album, Atlas their first single will be released 2nd of April. Battles have been developing a reputation as one of the most exciting live acts to grace the earth, with a legacy of much talked about sell out performances and the highlight of many underground music festivals such as ATP and Triptych. A long time coming, the first album proper from Battles is sure to be greeted with anticipation. The result in Mirrored simply could not have been speculated and is completely unique in its sound and style, even in comparison to previous work. For Mirrored charts an accomplished evolution since their last recordings. Still entirely intact are the unflinching experimentations and metallic angles of their young catalogue, but a new melodic insight has manifested itself in the form of some of their most engaging tracks yet. First single Atlas, is a verifiable anthem, unrelenting and gigantic, but never surrenders the skewed aesthetic of the band's past. www.contactmusic.com/new/home.nsf/webpages/battlesx28x03x07www.youtube.com/watch?v=IpGp-22t0lU

Well, no one ever replied to this, but a few months later, the buzz has increased significantly. This is getting played on Havoc 101 and MTV2...I think it can be a minor hit. It's already well on its way to anthem status for the indie set.

VERY weird, but I think I kinda like it. Don't see it catching on with the masses though.

Yes, it's very distinctive sounding, and quite unlike anything else on the indie "landscape" right now. Although, I've been cautiously observing microtrends over the past year or so, and there does seems to be an emergent "math-rock" movement on the horizon. Post-punk revivalism is on its deathbed, nu-rave is an artistically bankrupt concept (and just a new way to label any band that somehow combines electronic and rock aesthetics), and the so-called reinstatement of dream pop isn't exactly igniting any asses on fire. The promise of a 90's grunge-pop/Gish era Pumpkins revival is still a definite possibility (and no, I don't mean like Nickelback). Although the return of the Pumpkins themselves might postpone/cancel out any excitement bands like Autolux, Silversun Pickups, and Darker My Love have instigated, I wouldn't count it out yet. Change is in the air. But Oh Crap, if this ends up in an iTunes commercial, I'll just die. Imagine the masses bobbing their heads in approval to a melody that The AV Club describes as "the tic-strewn inner thoughts of a devil playing hopscotch". But it IS really catchy and even danceable, in a really morbidly cheerful way. It's the kind of perverse party track that Regan MacNeil would scamper up the walls to.
