Libertad debuted at #5 on the Billboard Top 200 with 92,000 copies sold. This is quite a step down from Contraband which debuted at #1 and sold 256,000 copies in it's first week. There are good reasons for that, the main one being that the band doesn't have the hype behind them anymore. They've been established so people aren't running out screaming to the stores to find out what the fuss is about. It's also very hard for an album to debut with those kinds of numbers now unless it's a really anticipated album or a really hyped one. I wouldn't particularly say this album has been either. Time will tell how sales pan out. If they keep a steady enough flow, that will be enough.

These days, I feel if a band like them with only one previous album under their belt and fame from previous huge successes in other bands, selling 92,000 copies and debuting at #5 isn't all that bad either.

In my case, "She Builds Quick Machines" isn't a very remarkable song, so why should I spring for their whole record already? (The fact that it's not in the Alternative Top 10 by now is also rather telling.) At this point it would feel like I'd be buying it out of obligation to Scott and the Gn'R guys than actually being excited about what I've heard. Contraband was a good record. It wasn't great, though.
