Excellent choice, then again I'd probably say that about any song on this great album.

Solid album track, but not a single. I already said what song I wanted them to release. Boo.

I'm surprised they haven't chosen Roadside either although I'm definitely happy with the single choices thus far. I figured they'd have one ballad off this album like they released Swing Life Away from the previous album, but maybe that will be the fourth single if there indeed is one.

It's my understanding that they went out of their way to avoid writing another ballad like that for this album. I'd be surprised if they released something like that this time around.

I don't see what would be wrong with releasing a ballad. The way I see it...."Swing Life Away" was extremely successful for the band and single-handedly made them a staple at their home format. Going out of their way to avoid writing ballads shows how they are limiting themselves as musicians, and releasing three consecutive similar-sounding (yet, brilliant, mind you) songs isn't a great marketing strategy to begin with (although, so far, so good, I guess). A mid-tempo finisher would have sufficed, better, though, than this clone.

A mid-tempo finisher would have sufficed, better, though, than this clone. I can think of a very good reason why a band might go out of their way to do that, and it's the situation that Papa Roach and Finger Eleven are currently facing: those two bands have become associated with a sound apart from their core, and are now forced to wear that like an albatross. Rise Against's biggest single from Siren Song was "Swing Life Away", a song totally the opposite of what the band is all about. And while it's true there is nothing wrong with releasing a song like that once in a while, I can also understand why the band would not want to become associated with that kind of sound. Case in point: I read a scathing review of Siren Song on Alternative Addiction because the listener heard "Swing Life Away" and was disappointed that the whole album wasn't like that and felt betrayed. And while they're a fucking moron, I can totally see how those kinds of opinions can not only exist, but interfere with the band's reputation.

That does make a lot of sense. Something tells me their label made them make Swing Life Away as a single, and with the way certain ballads have become huge over other singles over the past few years, it made a lot of sense for the label. However, I can see from the band's point of view with their stance as a political punk band to keep their strictly typical sound, and I respect that a lot.

One day they should do an all ballads album. Nevermind, that idea doesn't sound very punk. They really nailed it with "Roadside" though. Its one of the most beautiful songs I have heard from a band of this genre.
