the new album is really good. a lot like Ocean Avenue which is a good thing. Lights & Sounds was just... well as Tortuga said above, "filler." every band releases a shitty album now and than. luckly that was that. Fighting, Shrink The World & The Takedown are the stand out songs. I may actually buy this album after all haha.

Maybe I just don't have an ear for these things, but I'm listening to the album now and I do really like it, but I guess I just don't see how this album is any better or worse than Lights And Sounds. Then again, I didn't really hate that album either. Like AbsolutePunk for example, Jason Tate especially, seems to absolutely despise Lights And Sounds and yet worships the new album. And yet I don't hear that big of a stylistic difference. It's pop-punk with a violin. Some hits, some misses....I don't hear where the break is. It's just not popping out at me.

I can see Tate's point as I'm a huge lover of the pop-punk genre as well. I remember back before Yellowcard became big he was publicizing them as the best thing since sliced bread. Once I heard "Way Away", I was absolutely blown away by it, being one of the best pop-punk songs I've ever heard and immediately thought that they had humongous potential. Obviously I was and still am a huge fan of the "Ocean Avenue" album like Tate was/is, however I can't agree with him at all about his views of the "Lights And Sounds" album.
While, I thought "Ocean Avenue" was a better release, I think it was a great idea to differentiate their sound for their sophomore release and show the world that they're not just a generic pop-punk band with a violinist and had quite a few lighter Alternative type songs that I still wonder why never were released to the Hot AC format. With this new album "Paper Walls", they could have gone with either one of the two directions of the previous two albums or come up with a completely new sound. I guess since "Ocean Avenue" sold much better than "Lights And Sounds", they decided to go with that older type of sound, which I'm definitely happy with since I'm much more of a fan of that and it's everything I could have asked for as a huge pop-punk fan. The thing I'm not so sure of after hearing the album now is that if "Light Up The Sky" was exactly the best choice for a debut breakout single because it's certainly not doing very well, and I think there's much better choices on the album. This situation reminds me a lot of Hoobastank's decision to go with "If I Were You" first.

I just don't see how you can tell the difference. Yeah, there's a couple of acoustic tracks on Lights And Sounds, but that's really about it as far as I'm concerned.

While, I thought "Ocean Avenue" was a better release, I think it was a great idea to differentiate their sound for their sophomore release I believe you mean "follow-up" or at least "sophomore (for all intents and purposes)" release. In addition to One for the Kids, there were even a couple of records before that without Ryan Key.

I remember at the Warped Tour 2003 someone handed me a compilation of songs which included some very early Yellowcard tracks. I always thought they were just earlier demos pre-Ocean Avenue and didn't think much of them, but after doing some minor research just now, yep Ryan Key is not the singer in the songs I received on the complication. I guess you really do learn something new everyday.

I wouldn't sweat it too much. Yellowcard doesn't even consider those albums "canon". In a recent interview on AbsolutePunk, Ryan basically disowned One For The Kids.

From AbsolutePunk: After two days of sales, Yellowcard's Paper Walls is targeted for around 40-50K copies sold.
