This is the only song I've heard so far on the new album besides The Underclass Hero and March of The Dogs. As I've said in The Underclass Hero thread, this song really impressed and I like it much better than the other two songs. With that being said, I'm hoping it does better than The Underclass Hero is doing currently, which is fairly disappointing.

I'm listening to the album right now, and I have to say, I keep thinking it should be Mark Hoppus or Tom Delonge's voice on this. I'm not disappointed exactly, since it is a good album, but I think they've sacrificed their individuality on the altar of their fanbase. Chuck was way better than this, and unfortunately now they've become just another generic pop-punk band. They're not even doing gang-rapping like on the first album, so they don't even have a hook to fall back on.

Alright, now I've listened to the whole thing, and I have a little higher opinion of it now. The songs in the middle, say from track 5 through track 12, are much better than the openers and closers. In fact, I think maybe that was a deliberate move on their part, to put the better songs in the meat of the album. "Count Your Last Blessings", "The Jester", and "With Me" really stand out to me. Almost makes me feel like the Sum 41 I've come to love still exists somewhere somehow.
However, the opening and closing songs really sound very typical, and not even of Sum 41, but of Blink-182. In fact, "King Of Contradiction" even sounds like it should be on a Green Day album. I wish Sum 41 wouldn't feel so compelled to rip off their peers so heavily, especially when they had a very good sound all their own already mapped out. I would almost say the lack of Brownsound is the problem if not for some songs in the middle of the album that make me believe they could keep Chuck's sound without Brownsound if they wanted to, but I guess they don't, and that's a shame.
Another thing. "Walking Disaster" really reminded me of some song I can't place, and "Best Of Me" heavily recalls Blue October's "Hate Me". Like scarily recalls. I don't want to accuse Sum 41 of ripping them off, but it's a little too eerie.
I'm not entirely happy with the album but I'm also not very unhappy either. I didn't expect much to begin with, so I guess that has a lot to do with it. Still, I guess I was expecting them to surprise me anyway and I guess I'm a little disappointed that they didn't.

Well, not that any of these are unmistakably direct bites, but...
The intro/outro verse vocals remind me of "Story of a Lonely Guy" by blink-182. And I wanna say the drums remind me of "Stay Together for the Kids" verses.
The break right before the up-tempo part kicks in reminds me of the break right before the choruses in "Down" by blink-182.
During the up-tempo part, the guitars before the vocals kick in reminds me of both "Violence" and "Everytime I Look for You" by blink-182. Maybe even "Online Songs," as well (over a half-time beat.)
The vocals during that part (verse?) vaguely remind me of the verse melody of "No News Is Good News" by New Found Glory.
I believe what I recall most about the end of the chorus(?) where Deryck says "...world where I belong" is "The Party Song" by blink-182, where the instruments also drop out, before Mark sings, "Some girls try too hard" before both songs race off again.
Does any of that place anything for you?

I really have no clue how in the hell you managed to recall all of that. I know I couldn't do that. Remembering where you've heard a little tiny guitar part before? Jesus Christ on toast.
But no, I was referring to the chorus, which reminds me of something, but I can't place it. I don't think you mentioned it either. It might be a Blink-182 song. Unfortunately I don't have any of their albums anymore so I can't really check, but I'll try.

Oh, it was "First Date". The chorus. Similar melodic structure.

So I'm about 2/3 through listening to the new album now. I think overall it's good, but not great. About as good as I expected, and I can't say I'm disappointed in the least. I do think it's much more mature than I expected since I was originally thinking it would be similar to their "All Killer No Filler" material sound and lyric wise, but obviously that was a stupid prediction since that was six years ago and the band members have aged and gone through a lot musically and personally since then. I can definitely see the comparisons to Blink-182 in quite a few of the songs without a doubt with VERY similar melodies. I'm up to "King Of The Contradiction" now and holy s**t penance you couldn't be more correct, this sounds EXACTLY like a fast Green Day song. I guess if I think of anything else before I finish the album, I'll edit this post. Otherwise, I think it's a overall good album and at least there's a decent amount of variety. That's what I was most afraid of before I started listening. This is worth checking out for sure even if you're not a fan of the band.

Nah, I wouldn't agree with that last statement. Why would someone who wasn't a fan of the band check it out? It doesn't have that much variety. I'd say if you liked Sum 41, you won't dislike this album. If you didn't like them before, this won't really change your mind.

Why would someone who wasn't a fan of the band check it out? Eh, it could change someone's opinion of them like some bands have done to me in the past, but yeah overall you're probably right.

Usually it takes a real change in sound to do that. I mean like Sugar Ray or Papa Roach sized change.

Usually it takes a real change in sound to do that. I mean like Sugar Ray or Papa Roach sized change. Personal case in point: Getting Away with Murder.

I'll be buying all of Sum 41's records as a gesture of support if that really takes place, even though, artistically, those lyrics are ridiculous and childish.
Not sure about that source, though; 'offense' spelled with a 'c' and everything.

Offense is spelled "offence" in Canada too. It drives me crazy sometimes when I'm watching a hockey game on a Canadian broadcast since I'm not used to it.

I had no idea they considered that to be correct spelling, honestly. I guess with the British, the only games over there that they consider to be sports are soccer, which I couldn't care less about, and golf, in which there is no offense. With the Canadians, anytime I've seen them spell offense with a 'c', I just assumed it was because they were slow.

No offense, but I always spell offense with an 's'.

As a long time Sum 41 follower, i'm pretty disappointed with this album overall. The one thing I liked most about this band before Dave left was their metal influences. I'll have to listen a few more times, but I don't think i've heard any guitar solos in this album at all, if so very few. This album reminds me way too much of Blink 182.

This song is pretty good the more times i hear it. I have been listening to the album loads and i do like it but it seems to lack that edge past Sum 41 albums had, and thats why i liked them and not Blink 182.
