What artists can you think of that are widely known, but rarely, or have never had a top 40 hit?
2 names off the bat are Garth Brooks and Bjork.

I think Garth's cover of "Hard Luck Woman" hit the Top 40.
I would have to say Iron Maiden & Tim McGraw are pretty well known.

This list could theoretically be infinite. Think about it - what about artists in other countries around the world who have NEVER set foot in the US with a single?

Garth Brooks had one Hot 100 Top 40 hit to date in 1999. As Chris Gaines, "Lost In You" reached the Top 5.
Would you consider Frank Zappa? His only Top 40 hit (on the Hot 100) was "Valley Girl" in 1982.

Popular non-pop artists? Isn't that an oxymoron? ;)
A couple others come to mind:
Grateful Dead: Their one "fluke" was 1987's top 10 "A Touch Of Grey". Other than that, they've been a consistant no-show on the pop charts.
Pearl Jam: Big concert draw. Big album sales. But a rarity as far as pop chart success is concerned. Just three instances: "Daughter", "Better Man", and "Last Kiss".
Metallica: I suppose they would count for pretty much the same reasons as Pearl Jam.

A few more to chew on.
Phish: Immensely popular, never very poppy.
They Might Be Giants: Another band with a pretty sizable following, yet the biggest blip they've made on the pop radar was when their Malcolm In The Middle theme "Boss Of Me" barely cracked the top 50 a couple years ago.
"Weird Al" Yankovic: Who hasn't heard of "Weird Al"? He's always doing a parody of something. But, I suppose his particular "brand" of music doesn't lend itself well to big airplay. His only top 40 victory -- "Eat It" (#19 in 1984).
Enya: Well known and recognizable sound for over a decade. But New Age is one of those "niche markets" that's always a tough sell to pop. She's only managed to break in twice: "Orinoco Flow (Sail Away)" and "Only Time".

I'm surpised the Dixie Chicks' only Top Pop 40 hit was "Landslide." I think it's one of their most boring releases to date, I think "Cowboy Take Me away" or "Goodbye Earl" would do so much better on pop.
