In case you haven't heard AT40 yet, Casey had a rather comical goof this morning. Sometime in the second hour, when he gave out which number one song was on this date X years ago, Casey stated the following:
"The number one song twenty years ago this week back in 1988 was 'Total Eclipse of the Heart' by Bonnie Tyler..."
As a great man once said, "D'OH!"

"... twenty years ago this week back in 1988..." Oh god... does he make this type of mistake all the time? That sure was embarrassing...

When he tells the number one song from 1988, what chart does he go by between August, 1988 and January, 1989? Of course, generally, both Billboard and R&R were both very close and usually had the same number one songs, but there were some differences, especially near the end of 1988. Maybe during the weeks the number one songs weren't the same, he won't mention that year. For this weekend's mistake, I'm thinking he meant to say 1983.

I'm not sure what he would use between those times you had stated, I'm guessing Billboard still since it was what the show was using and CT40 was a different show.
In a related note, listening to Rick Dees' countdown this morning, he had mentioned that "King of Pain" was number one 20 years ago this week when announcing that Eminem was turned the big 3-0 later this week.

I don't think Casey is allowed to use Billboard chart data anymore.

I don't think Casey is allowed to use Billboard chart data anymore. He does when he talks about the number one song from a given week before 1988.

That's kinda like Dick Clark saying "Dropping 3 places this week from number 9 to number 14"... or better yet in 1994 when he said "Remember earilier this year when Bryan Adams, Rod Stewart, and Sting had a big hit? Well a group in the countdown this week share the same name as that song title, All For One. Here is All-4-One with I Swear."

That's interesting, because on the few rare occasions when he has listed the chart peak of the "extras" on his HotAC show, he has used R&R data, even when the song hit during the Billboard years.

My guess is that he may have just been reading it off. The shows are scripted, and if there is a typo, no one may notice it on the staff, including whomever is reading it.
Of course, everyone listening does notice it, because of the fact that they are listening and paying careful attention.
