In reading some posts lately, I see a number of profanities, which personally doesn't bother me but...well, as you know, I have experience with ProBoards...Actually I just became an admin over at the XFWL boards, which is on Proboards...And I happen to know that ProBoards has very clear guidelines about profanity and how it should be, I don't want to say censored, but in essence that's what it is...
Like I said, personally I disagree with ProBoards on this matter...But it's not up to me...I know that the guy who runs ProBoards is known to check out boards on his server every now and then, and if he sees something that goes against his Terms Of Service, he can and will delete the board...
I'm assuming, after all the trouble you guys just went through to start this board and track down members for it, the last thing you want is to have it shut down...
You should, if you haven't already, check out ProBoards TOS and possibly adapt them into your own guidelines for this board...
Just my two cents...

I'm trying to basically keep it the same as it was on R&R. I don't censor profanity, but I expect people not to overuse it.

I understand that, and agree with you fully...But again, I really think you should look at Proboards TOS...Remember, this isn't just your board...You don't own it per se...Proboards owns it and is allowing you to use it...But if they find something that they feel goes against there (rather vague IMHO) guidelines, they can (and have in the past) delete the board...Something I for one would hate to see...

That's true, but I'm sure the administration of Proboards would give sufficent warning if that were the circumstances. I doubt they'd just delete the board suddenly. I mean at R&R, there was some warning (of course I shouldn't compare, as I don't know for sure the grounds for the closing of those boards.)
Anyway, the profanity would need to be pretty severe, I would think, to lead to such an event. I mean, just a few f's and b's isn't going to make much of a difference.

www.proboards.com/Information-Terms_of_Service.htmlYes, basically it would have to be something major for Proboards to delete the site...I know one site that was deleted, but it was over a racial slur (those aren't tolerated at all)...But I also know that Proboards prefers that words like a certain "F-rhymes with duck" should be edited to at least F***, and not allowed to be straight out...Others, like "S-add a hit" should also be done that way...Basically, think of it like music on the radio...Those words would be edited in some way on a top 40 station, so they probably should be here as well... The owner of Proboards would likely contact the admin here if he has a major problem with something on the site...But if there's something huge (like a racial slur), he could delete the board without any notice...

Well I gotta say one of the many reasons I prefer this board over TMN was because of the very strict and unecessary language guidelines there.

My personal thoughts were always cursing is fine, as long as 1) it isn't done excessively and 2) it isn't directed at a particular member(s). However, thanks for bringing this to our attention Joe. However, I'll be more cautious with this from now on.

Hmm... I guess it's better to be safe than sorry. I'll go ahead and make sure any profanity dealing with race and sexual orientation, and the "S", "F", and "G.D." words are censored.

I have no idea what "G.D." is.
I'd rather Not have any profanity, but that'll be impossible to enforce. And it would be rather totalitarian.
However, in general, I would say that you shouldn't expect much respect from people if you regularly use profanity in your posts / everyday conversation. It's really unnecessary.

"G.D." is that one particular use of the Lord's name in vain, I believe. I will definitely try to watch my mouth. If I slip, feel free to edit me. ;)

If its overuse, then of course it becomes a problem and it'll be dealed with. In my case, when I use profanity, its mostly out of sheer enthusiasm. I don't understand why that word is such a big deal. It practically ruined Sophie's "Murder On The Dancefloor" with that damn radio edit.

And about the song, I'm just pointing out that it loses its "oomph" once that word is taken out. It isn't about whether it becomes a hit or not with or without the word.

I've actually never heard the song edited before on the radio. Personally, I think it's fine the way it is, I mean, I can't imagine anyone who would be offended by that mild obscenity listening to the song in the first place. Yes, the song sucks anyway, but yes, it would suck much more without the GD.
On the topic of swearing, I think it's fine to put a few expletives now and then because, admit it, that's the way almost all of us talk at times. Of course, bad language and (especially) racial slurs specifically directed to a certain poster is no doubt unacceptable.

Call me a prude, but it's kind of annoying reading through a post with the "f" word thrown out there (usually for no reason whatsoever). Yeah, I use that particular word quite a bit in my own speech, but I don't type the way I talk (which is why it also annoys me to see posts heavily sprinkled with "like" and "you know").
Sorry, this wasn't directed at anyone in particular... guess I'm still grumpy after staying up so late to watch a pathetic Bucs game. Dadgum it. ;)

it also annoys me to see posts heavily sprinkled with "like" I like really think if like swearing could like have the board like taken down, then like a filter like may have to be like put in place.

I don't really mind if people swear and stuff, but just don't do it excessively. For me, I tend to asterisk my letters if I feel the need to swear on this board... I don't think I've ever sworn on this board yet... I don't think I did...
