How does the "Mark as Read" button work?

Okay, I've only been coming to this site for almost a year, but just noticed the "Mark as Read" button. How does this work?

There are two types of folders next to topics. One shows that you read it and one shows that you haven't yet read it. If you click "mark as read," all the folders will change to the type that shows that you already viewed it.

I hit the "Mark as read" button and I really didn't notice anything change.  I see pink folders and yellow ones.  What do they mean?  Also, I see "New" next to some threads.  What is considered "New".  Thanks a bunch!

It means someone made a post since you last viewed the topic.

So does the pink folder mean that it is a thread with a bunch of pages?  It's yellow if not really a big thread, then turns pink if it is a big thread?  I've seen flames too, does it turn from pink to flames if it is a really hot thread? 

And thanks about the new button.  If I read the thread and then hit refresh the new button disappears.

Folder colors indicate whether or not you have read them, not how many pages there are.

Aw sh*t, I thought I had it figured out. But some folders are pink and some are yellow and I know I haven't read any of them cuz they don't interest me.  So don't understand still.  ???
