Yeah, i always thought "Lady Marmalade" was the biggest hit of 2001 no matter what anyone else said. I mean the song spent 10 freakin weeks at the top of the charts! How can it come in at #10 on the year end chart? It's ridiculous that so many people here think the year end charts are an accurate measurment of what the biggest hits of the year were. When a song spends that much time as the #1 song, it will be the most remembered song of the year no matter how fast it falls. When people think of 2001, "Hanging By A Moment" is not gonig to pop in their heads, "Lady Marmalade" is.

BTW, i hated the music in 2001. Besides "Lady Marmalade" "Fallin" "Survivor" and "I'm Real", everything else wasn't #1 worthy.

Matt what are you talking about? I did not dismiss my Audience method. In fact, Audience Impression favors "Lady Marmalade" more than spins do since the song was huge in urban cities. Don't be so quick to make false accusations about my posts.

I think both would be remembered. Unfortunately, the band Lifehouse is a one-hit wonder (for now), but the song will be remembered for years to come. It still gets play every now and then on Z100 (the nation's most listened to station) and other stations in this market even more so than Lady Marmalade.

Lady Marmalade is a cover, so of course that song will be remembered, but will it be remembered for the original version by Patti LaBelle or will it be remembered for the newer version in the future? I'm sure it'd still be the Patti LaBelle one.

Although i agree with the way Billboard Measures the hot 100, i think they are leaving a out a big chunk of other things that determine a hit song. Video Airplay, Internet Downloads, and all those goodies. Lady M won "Video Of The Year" on MTV and was in Heavy Rotation on all the music channels. It spent 9 weeks as the most played song in the country, i think when people think of the year they would think about that. And that's not including all that unnecissay discussions about Christina looking like Twisted Sister, or the movie Moulin Rouge, or the two huge performances they gave on National TV. Lady M was the biggest hit of the year.

And it can be argued that Debbie Boone's "You Light Up My Life" was the biggest hit of 1977-78, with 10 weeks at #1 on the Hot 100, and I can tell you from personal experience that it was played to death on the radio back then. But it rarely (if ever) gets played today at any oldies or AC format (where you would expect to hear it), and I'd guarantee that 9 out of 10 people who listened to the radio during that winter would tell you how much they hate the song even to this day.

You are telling me a song by a no name one hit wonder band is going to be more remembered than a song by 4 female artists who have had a combined total of 15 top ten hits in the 2000's? Their names alone makes the song more memorable than "Hanging By A Moment". Christina Aguilera + Pink? Who could ever forget that?

Yes. That's EXACTLY what I'm saying. My point is that while Hanging By a Moment is a song by a one-hit wonder, it was such a hit that it was the biggest hit of that year.

I don't hear Lady Marmalade as much as would expect it too if it were the biggest song of that year.

It's interesting though to see that Christina and Pink were involved in such a big song and are now rivals, but at this point, no one has really brought that up.

Hanging by a Moment by my accounts is the bigger song since it's been played by the Hot AC and Pop stations more than Lady Marmalade.

Besides, Lady Marmalade won't even be the song that Christina's remembered for.

Actually, with the Pink/Christina rivalry going on, it has given Lady M more exposure.

Whatever, you can say what you want, nothing will convince me that "Lady Marmalade" was not the biggest hit of 2001, just like how no one can convince me that "Lose Yourself" wasn't the biggest hit of 2002.

In that case "Dirrty" is more popular the "Beautiful", right? And the mostpopular songs of all time are "Justify My Love" and "Thriller"?

Also, you bash one hit wonders, but "Come On Eileen" is one of the most remembered and still-played songs of the 80's. Whitesnake was a two-hit pop wonder and "Here I Go Again" still gets decent airplay. If these two songs can stand the test of time, Lifehouse's "Hanging By A Moment" can last as well.

I just heard "Here I Go Again" on some distant radio (while waiting outside for the mail to come, which was supposed to contain my copy of R&R's year-end issue but never came >:().

I agree with you, radiorules. But, unfortunetly, there is no way a "popularity chart" that combines all forms of exposure to a song can be compiled. So we are left with radio charts, which I think measure a song's popularity better than any other kind of chart.

Also, I agree with most of your choices for top song of the year, except I would choose "Complicated" for 2002 and "Smooth" for 1999. And how in the world did you come up with "Take A Bow" for 1995? :) I never hear that song, and I don't think it has lasted as a top song of the year. I would pick "Name" or "Kiss From A Rose" any day over "Take A Bow".
