...rent Spins. I used a Complicated formula that, strangely enough, only Sk8er Bois can understand.
Using spins from Jan 1 to Dec 19 of 2003, I took the amount of recurrent spins and multiplied it by a logarithmic factor, before taking the exponent of the sum of that result, chart spins and a square root factor that was proven to be an accurate weight (minimum squared error & unbiased) using statistical analysis.
I would argue that recurrent spins are critical to defining how big a hit a song is. Who even remembers hit songs that were mere flashes in the pan nowadays? If a song is still getting substantial airplay months after release, then it's the bigger hit.
