I really don't think either "My Immortal" or "Numb" will do as well for the 2004 chart as you guys predict, as much as I like both tracks a lot. Neither song will have the staying power of previous songs by the same band that reached #2 for the year (BMTL and ITE). The #1 song of 2004 will probably come around late spring or something, like it normally does. I agree with most of your first para, but since the turn of the millennium, the #1 song has debuted on the chart before the start of the calendar year.

Yeah, I don't think the #1 song for the year has ever debuted in late spring. The latest debut for a year-end #1 I can think of is "Iris" by the Goo Goo Dolls which debuted in April.

So as of this point, where will "Toxic" go by year-end?

Puddle of Mudd was #9 on the 2002 year-end chart. #4 was "Wherever You Will Go" by The Calling, a song that only peaked at #6 on the weekly chart.

"Miss You Much" by Janet Jackson, the #1 song of 1989, debuted in late August. And I believe "You Light Up My Life" by Debby Boone might have debuted sometime in September, 1977. As for the PPW era, I believe "Iris" would be the latest release for a number one song of the year. Anyway, I believe Keith3000 meant late spring would be when the #1 song of 2004 hit number one (or wherever it peaked - possibly #2 a la "Everything You Want" and "Hanging By A Moment". As I recall, both of those songs were at their peak in spring.

The year's biggest songs are almost always at their peak around spring/summer. Of course, we can never be sure---the #1 song of 2003 (calendar year) was "Where Is The Love" which came out relatively late in the year.

I agree with most of your first para, but since the turn of the millennium, the #1 song has debuted on the chart before the start of the calendar year. Hanging By A Moment didn't debut before the start of the calendar year on pop... It debuted in the top 40 on 2/23/01, and so perhaps it was in the top 50 for a week or two at most, but still not before the calendar year.

I assume Hoobastank is on pace to pass Maroon 5 and end up at #2 for the year, right?

I assume Hoobastank is on pace to pass Maroon 5 and end up at #2 for the year, right? Well, I wouldn't rule out Hoobastank for #1 just yet. But Usher will have to fall off pretty precipitiously (or Hoobastank to stick around for a while) for "The Reason" to take over #1.

It seems as if "Yeah!", "The Reason", and "This Love" seem certain of taking the top 3 spots respectively, especially considering the recurrent play that will be considered. I guess there's a chance Hoobastank may overtake Usher over the next three months, but that's pretty doubtful.
