The ClearChannel Empire in Miami has 3 stations and basically play the exact same stuff. Y100 (Basically all Hip Hop + Kelly Clarkson) 103.5 The Beat (Hip Hop and Mega 94 (Supposed to be more Spanish oriented but they play the same crap Y100 and Beat plays).
Well now none of these stations are in the top 10. In fact, they're losing to the Oldies station in the ratings. The way the playlists look, they could shut down 2 of the stations, combine the 3 and there wouldn't be much of a difference alltogether.
The Beat was the highest ranked at #11 Y100 had fallen to #15 in a tie with the talk station Mega 94 is down to #18 behind basically a couple of spanish stations, Air America, a Sports station, and an AM Gospel station.

Clear Channel owns two country stations each in Austin and Greenville-Spartanburg. They also own two rhythmics in San Francisco. Cox also owns two country stations in Birmingham.

Well Clear Channel owns WHTZ (CHR-Pop), WKTU (CHR-Rhythmic/Dance) and WWPR (Urban) in New York City and those three stations are doing better than the three in Miami-Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood.

They also own two rhythmics in San Francisco. Those would be KYLD and KMEL. From mid April to early October 2004, there were THREE rhythmics from Clear Channel in the SF market! KBTB was the third one. It flipped back to Dance while it was doing good.

But what is the point of having multiple radio stations that play the same songs? They're taking ratings away from themselves!

I forgot to mention, too, that Clear Channel owns two gospel stations here in Jackson: one on FM (WHLH) and one on FM (WZRX). They had leased the AM station to another company, but they took over the station last year and kept it gospel. One makes it worse is that the FM station isn't doing very well in revenue, so I don't see how keeping gospel on AM would make it better.
In the case of other stations having two stations with the same format, those stations were probably quite successful. In Greenville-Spartanburg, the two country stations there are normally in the top five and probably bill pretty well, so there probably was no need to change. Another strategy to that is it can discourage another competitor from trying to compete with a like format.

In my market, Nassau-Suffolk, the top two stations (WALK Patchogue and WLTW from New York City) are both Clear Channel AC stations. Citadel owns two Country stations with a combined 13.9 rating in Des Moines. In Danbury, Connecticut, there are five CHR-Pop stations in the ratings (albeit with low ratings) three of which (WHTZ, WKCI, and WKSS) are owned by Clear Channel. Although I don't know if either one of them is a stereotypical AC station, Cox owns two AC stations with overlap in southwestern Connecticut in WEZN 99.9 and WCTZ 96.7 (formerly Oldies WKHL).

Citadel owns Diva 92.3/New Orleans (which actually puts a better signal into Baton Rouge than N.O.) and Diva 103.3/Baton Rouge. Both stations have the same morning show, same station voice, and play the same library of music.

In Honolulu Clear Channel owns KSSK-FM and KSSK-AM, both are AC stations. The AM offers news at the top and bottom of the hour and has more commercials. It simulcasts during the Perry & Price morning show, syndicated weekend shows, Saturday nights and overnights.

ABC Radio / Atlanta has two country stations, Kicks 101.5 and Eagle 106.7. However, if I'm not mistaken, Eagle leans towards the classic side of the format.

Both stations have the same morning show, same station voice, and play the same library of music. They should just simulcast... that way, their ratings would be combined as one.

Not all of them are local stations for that market, but in the Sarasota-Bradenton, FL ratings, Clear Channel owns four Country stations and three News/Talk stations.
