I thought there was a need for a thread to discuss older songs that have been covered by contemporary artists. While some people consider this "stealing", I think it's cool as long as the artist convering the song is able to give it a new twist while maintaining the original's essence. Recent cover songs I have really like include: Molotov - " me convierto en marciano" (original song "i've turned into a martian by The Misfits). This is such a cool track. Molotov took the original punk song and turned into a really catchy Mexican cumbia. If you're gonna do a cover, you better be willing to take some risks and do something different (ya hear that Fey?). Moenia - " ni tu ni nadie" (orginal song by Alaska y Dinamara) I've never been a huge fan of the original material by Alaskay y Dinamara, but I cannot get enough of Moenia's cover. In fact, I was never really a fan of Moenia in general (a song here and there), but this was the track that converted me. It's edgy, it's fun, and that is one killer beat! Thalia - "you spin me around (like a record)" original song by Dead or Alive "a quien le importa?" original song by Alaska y Dinamara Two cheesy 80's pop songs were given the millenium makeover by Mexican pop starlet Thalia and the result was actually good. Their still 100% pop, but Thalia was able to give them a fun, non-pretentious element. I've never seen girls run faster to the dance floor as when Thalia's "a quien le importa" comes on. The one's I've hated: Yurida - "angeles" original song "angels" by Robbie Williams I guess it's easy to pick on this Academia alumn considering she's been on the music scene for about a year. But that doesn't give her an excuse tu butcher one of the greatest British pop songs of the last decade. >:( Paulina Rubio - "i was made for lovin' you" original song by Kiss Kiss should sue Paulina for everything she's worth for ruining my favorite song by them. It's bland, boring, and a bit tedious. Everything the original was NOT! What do you all think? Which covers do you like? And which ones should have never been re-recorded?

The ones I liked: Jennifer Lopez - "I Could Fall In Love" : I'm not sure if she was lipsyncing in this performance, but hey, I still liked it. It was touching. Belinda and Allison - "Hips Don't Lie" : punk rock version of Shakira's song. It sounded pretty good, IMO. Hated: Kumbia Kings - "Pachuco" : lol, at them trying to be all rock by covering a Maldita Vecindad song.

The ones I liked: Amaral feat. Chetes - "Si Tú No Vuelves" (Originally by Miguel Bosé) This version is better than the original, great song by Chetes and the Spanish duo, Amaral.
I hated: Yuridia - Angels (by Robbie Williams) and Yuridia - Maldita Primaver (by Yuri)
what is she pretending? people keep buying her CD's because she was in La Academia (which I think it's a crap) and the cover songs are aweful!

I'm sure that was interesting... :o I didn't know Yuridia had also covered "maldita primavera". Does she have any original songs of her own????

Thalia - "a quien le importa?" original song by Alaska y Dinamara ... I've never seen girls gay males run faster to the dance floor as when Thalia's "a quien le importa" comes on.

I agree with the "Ni Tu Ni Nadie" remake being really good. But I disagree about "I Was Made For Lovin' You." I thought Pau did a great job, at least better than Anna Vissi's remake with the same producer! (the Greek Madonna...both she & Paulina did the song at around the same time and Paulina's was better.) Fey did a good job with "La Fuerza del Destino" and "Barco a Venus" I thought...but the other clips from the album didn't sound good at all. (Her mess of "Un Año Mas" sticks in my mind...) Other good remakes: - K-Paz de La Sierra "Pero Te Vas A Arrepentir"/"Mi Credo" - JAMS! turned dreary slow jams into duranguense smash hits. - Laura Pausini "Inolvidable" - hot! slow jam. - Jennifer Peña "El Dolor De Tu Presencia" - great! a classic in its own right. - Marlon & La India "Usted Abuso" - they really made it their own. just as good as Celia's! - Thalia "Suerte en Mi" - Super-smash Super charged latin pop/dance HIT! Gloria's probably JELL-US she did such a good Spanish version of her song. Bad remakes: - Los Temerarios "Por Tu Maldito Amor" - yuck. they overdid the R in "por"..el Chente's was so much better. - Alejandra Guzman "Bidi Bidi Bom Bom" - AWFUL. - Thalia "Amor Prohibido" - It's only tolerable because it's Selena's song...its so bad though :/ nu Thalia

I love the Reggaeton Ninos cover of Hips Dont Lie called Kids Dont Lie. LMAO! Wow! That's all I have to say abou that. I thought of some othe good ones: "la coqueta" by Kinky - I don't know who sings the original (I want to say Los Huracanes del Norte), but this one is really cool. This song was actually the one that converted me into a Kinky fan. Prior to this, I kinda thought they were overrated. "la jaula de oro" by Julieta Venegas (original by Los Tigres del Norte) - Man, my girl Julieta tore this up!! Don't tell my dad this, but I actually like A LOT better than the original. LOL ! A friend actually burned Fey's LA FUERZA DEL DESTINO album for me, and it's not really bad. It's just that she stuck to the original sound waaaaaay too much. It's as if she was scared to screw them up, but that's just a risk an arstist has to take when covering an older popular song.

I never heard the orignal "Jaula De Oro". Its weird how she doesn't change the gender when she sings it or when she recorded it. She kept in the male point of view.
She also did a cover of Jose Jose's "El Triste". Again, I haven't heard the orignal but I like bassline and the accordion at the end.

She also did a cover of Jose Jose's "El Triste" Yeah, that one sucked. I actually have the album tribute to Jose Jose. It features Molotov, Julieta, La Lupita, and other various artists from Mexico. I don't like it a whole lot, but I think it's because I don't really like Jose Jose's songs. They're all so lame and cheesy.

I have to say that regarding Alaska & Dinarama and Mecano, I am very hard to please with covers because I am a huge fan of those two groups and the original songs they released.
I do think Moenia did a good job. They made the song theirs going far from the original.
Thalia's "A Quien Le Importa" was ok, but if I have to choose, of course I prefer a million times more Alaska's voice. And I do like a lot of Thalia's music so I did enjoy her version too, but not as much as the original.
Fey and even Ana Torroja (Mecano's vocalist) have recently released solo albums full of Mecano covers. In my opinion, both with mixed results. Being such a big fan of Mecano, whenever there's a cover, I prefer when the cover is very original and totally reworks the songs musically and the way it's sung. I would've liked to find more experimentation and originality in Fey's and Ana's albums. Some songs were cool, some other ones too close to the original. In some songs Fey was copying too much the intonation used by Ana in the original Mecano recordings. Even Ana herself (as a solo artist) sung some of the songs in a way too close to they way she originally sang them!!

I don't know if better than Miguel's version, but really good. I've only heard it once so I cannot decide on that. Besides... I'm a HUGE Miguel Bose fan too so I'll be very demanding judging it, ha, ha. :)

Thalia - "a quien le importa?" original song by Alaska y Dinamara ... I've never seen girls gay males run faster to the dance floor as when Thalia's "a quien le importa" comes on. Even though, kinglouiexviii, I'm sure girls love the song too, I would totally have to agree with geoxguy. Even before Thalia covered A Quien Le Importa, that songs was already a very big GAY ANTHEM in Spain and many Latin American countries. Just listen to the lyrics. They could not relate better to the gay community. The group itself and the singer Alaska (Olvido Gara) have a very big gay following. Alaska & Dinarama does not exist anymore. It evolved into Fangoria which of course has a big gay following too as well as pop success. Their last album and single made it to the top ten in Spain recently. Just so you have an idea, the video for the latest Fangoria single was filmed at a famous gay dance club in Mexico. All live performances of the song, Alaska's dancers are two tall travesties. And... it's needless to say that Thalia has a big gay following too.

I thought of some other good ones:
Kinky's version of "La Coqueta" (I don't know who sang the original; some Norteno group) is killer. I saw them perform it live, and I was jumping up and down.
Cafe Tacvba's punk-infused version of "no controles" (original by the 80's girl group FLANS) is awesome.
Zurdok recorded an electronic/rock version of "american woman" (by The Who) for the terrible movie AMERICAN VISA starring Demian Bichir and Kate del Castillo.
And of course, "piel canela" by Natalia Y La Forquetina which I have been raving for a while now. Still don't know who originally sang it (and I don't agree with my good friend Turtle who INSISTS that it was Tin Tan). ;)

But yes, the cover by Vaquero for American Woman is great! Other good cover: "Si Te Vuelves A Enamorar" by TOLIDOS (Originally by Bronco), this song is for the "Tributo al mas grande" that is coming in February, cool rock cover! Plus, there is going to be like a tribute to Pedro Infante, and it is suppose that Chetes was going to record today the song "Enamorada" by Pedro Infante for the "tribute" album, still don't know if the song will be with the "ranchero/mariachi" classical Infante style or more rocker like Chetes songs.
