I was wondering who you all consider to be the most underrated artists in Spanish music. For every Shakira, Juanes, and Mana, there are dozens of acts who deserve a chance in the spotlight. Here are two that come to mind instantly:
* Ely Guerra
The Mexican alt-rock queen is a force to be reckoned with. She has a great voice, interesting & original lyrics, and a sound that is truly unique. In other words, she is the Mexican female deserving of the title, "la reina del rock". And yet, Alejandra Guzman is the one who sells out tours and is certified platinum while Ely's album sells barely make a bleep.
Her greatest work to date, 2004's Sweet & Sour, Spicy y Hot, was my favorite album by a Latin artist that year. A collection of 70's beats and raucous guitar riffs adorned by soulful lyrics, this album went unnoticed by fans and critics alike. Since, she has not recorded anything worthwhile (Earlier this year she did release a live album recorded at Mexico City's Teatro Metropolitan). Will she ever get the attention of another once-obscure rock diva turned pop songstress who now dominates the radio airwaves? You know who I'm talking about.
Here's a little taste of Ely: "quiereme mucho" from Sweet & Sour, Spicy y Hot.

* Los Amigos Invisibles
This Venezuelan super-group has been recording an eclectic mix of sounds for a while now but have yet come out of the underground latin music scene. Their sound, a blend of funk, pop, rock, and salsa is cater to dance-loving Latinos, and yet, they seem to be bigger outside of Latin America. Go figure.
Here is my favorite song by them: the bossa nova-tinged, "playa azul" from 2004's The Venezuelan Zinga Son, Vol. 1.
