1) WOTS (great song) 2) Only remember the Smash Mouth song, which I didn't care for 3) Every Morning (love the "Suavecito" riff; always hated "All Star") 4) The best or near best of each band; I vote for "Someday" 5) Only remember the Sugar Ray song 6) WIO by a landslide. Smash Mouth showed how great singers the Monkees actually were. 7) Answer The Phone, from what little I've heard of either song 8) Mr. Bartender. When I first heard both songs, I was neutral to Mr. B and put off by YAM#1. I started liking Mr. B, but by then they stopped playing it, and the last time I heard YAM#1, a month or 2 ago, for the first time, I found myself liking that, but haven't heard it since. That sort of thing has been happening with a lot of songs lately. 9) "Waste" by a huge margin. A great song, terribly underrated vs. a lousy remake. 10) Heard the Sugar Ray song once (pretty neutral towards it as I remember) and the other song not at all.
As it turns out, both are capable of masterpieces, but tend more often towards the mundane to miserable. Sugar Ray wins 5-2.

i assume you mean "Fush Yu Mang" as opposed to "self titled" I think he means their third album, released after "Astro Lounge" "Fush Yu Mang" was a great album. It had a lot of character the other albums lack. Too bad they didn't continue trying to be an Alternative artist. Sincerely, Noah Eaton

Sincerely, Noah Eaton that could be it... but in theory neither Smash Mouth or Sugar Ray have produced a strong album, personally i rank even " 14:59" as rather mediocre, the songs have the sell-out feel, like they desperately wanted to be a mainstream success for the remainder of their career...

"14:59" is the best of their albums, but also quite a mediocre album. Two singles, "Someday", "Falls Apart" were at least listenable to me. Everything else is a mess. Just sellout over-produced hip-hop pop rock fondue. As for Smash Mouth, "Walkin' On The Sun" had the production feel as though they really wanted a hit single, but it also had a raw quality to it, a true Alternative blend. Plus I think that single was well-written and organized. Truly, what the heck did happen with the flower children? Some of the other songs from "Fush Yu Mang" are kind of goofy, but also just fun to listen to. "Heave-Ho" makes me laugh, who doesn't have neighbors like that? "Pet Names" is kind of funny too, while "Padrino" and "Disconnect The Dots" show more deeper songwriting. There's more substance to "Fush Yu Mang" compared to anything Sugar Ray released.

i assume you mean "Fush Yu Mang" as opposed to "self titled" Nope. The self-titled album was their third album and although it had a couple of good songs it was horrible overall. They did nothing edgy on it at all. Fush Yu Mang is what propelled them to the limelight in the first place. Alternative music fans probably liked both Fush Yu Mang and Astrolounge pretty well, but the self-titled album dropped all pretense of artistry and went straight for the pop charts, which was a career killing move. Too bad, because Get The Picture? while totally pop is also an excellent album and if it had been their follow up to Astrolounge I think they'd be huge right now.

Actually Sugar Ray was morphing into trying to be a beach band with a light but interesting sound. Unfortunately for them, most people didn't get that. Their latest album is totally surf almost more in a Jack Johnson vein. Floored is my favorite album from them though. 14:59 is all over the place. I don't see it so much as a sell-out album as I do a trying to find theirselves album which spreads the music out too much. That album is very diverse.

A song like "Changes" released to the rock format would show a less "whiny, wussy, ballad" feel for them...

A song like "Changes" released to the rock format would show a less "whiny, wussy, ballad" feel for them... I too am disappointed with their choice of singles this second time around. They mastered their selection for "The Better Life". But with the exception of releasing "When I'm Gone" as the strong, hardcore first single from "Away From The Sun", they have failed to fluctuate their selections. When you think about it, "The Road I'm On" is also a ballad. Three consecutive ballads is a weak strategy for their non CHR/Pop base. Brad Arnold said so himself that they're not pop, they're rock, and they would be devastated to lose their alternative/rock platform. Surely they are not taking that base seriously. Their third album will definitely prove what base they desire most. Sincerely, Noah Eaton

I'd say Away From the Sun is still a very rock album. However, if the next album is mostly pop, THEN, we've got problems. I don't understand why they aren't releasing more "rock" songs to the rock format though. I don't think that is a very bright move.

I don't understand why they aren't releasing more "rock" songs to the rock format though. I don't think that is a very bright move. What they should have done is release "When I'm Gone" first as it was, but instead of releasing "The Road I'm On" next release "Changes" or one of their other edgier tracks, then "Here Without You", and of course because it hit, release "Away From The Sun". That way their rock fan's appetite would be sated and still get the commerical appeal. Yes, they must think hard before they release another album with the same amount of pop material, if they don't want to lose their Rock audience. Sincerely, Noah Eaton
