Two big songs by the Commodores from the fall of 1979 (released closer together than usual). The first one, "Sail On" topped the R&R chart but couldn't get past number four on Billboard. Conversely, "Still" did top the Billboard chart but only made Top 5 on R&R. Which one do you like better?
I prefer "Sail On". It has a little more feel to it while "Still" just sounds so depressing.

Gotta go with "Sail On". It almost had a country feel to the verses... and the climax near the end is great. "Still", on the other hand, seemed like a typical boring Lionel Richie love ballad (sometimes I get it confused with his solo song "Truly").

Gotta go with "Sail On". It almost had a country feel to the verses... and the climax near the end is great. And how! I like it when he repeats "Good time" with more feel, and then they really start singing their hearts out ("Whoa, Sail On, honey/Good times never felt so good!" ) I gotta go dig out my "Commodores Greatest Hits" album and listen to the song - it's been ages since I've heard it! Yeah, but I love "Truly", it's one of my favorite Lionel Richie songs ever. "Still", as I said, is just so depressing, both lyrically and the song itself.

These are both excellent classics. "Still" was a beautiful ballad that got a lot of airplay for over a year, almost unheard of in those days. But "Sail On" is even better. I just love the way it's done. The Commodores were one of my favorite groups ever.
