"One More Try" followed by "Look Away" LOL, those are the only two I haven't heard (or don't remember). You do realize that we're voting for the song that we think is the biggest hit, not your favorite song, right?

R&B trio "Divnine" remade "one more try" a few years back. Im sure u must have heard it. it says "one more try" was #1 or the year so i figure it must be the biiggest hit. ;)

This one is the only one that is actually still popular. Plus, look at these guy's album sales. A no-brainer in my book.

"Look Away", because, all (R&R CHR/Pop) points totaled (even the ones that carried over into 1989), it completely outshines the song that R&R named top song of the year, "Get Outta My Dreams, Get Into My Car". The song, BTW, was Billboard's #1 song of 1989, due to its points being deferred from 1988 because of cutoff date rules.

Absolutely. None of the other songs spent a monster # of weeks at number one. 4 weeks isn't much greater than two weeks, so no big differnce there. Factor in a 15 times platinum album, staying power (I bet that GnR gets more gold airplay on Pop/Hot AC stations than the other songs combined, take away INXS), and influence on music and this is easily the biggest hit. I would also say "Pour Some Sugar On Me" should be on this list as well.

I would also say "Pour Some Sugar On Me" should be on this list as well. Either that or "Love Bites", since that hit #1 on both R&R and CHR/Pop. "Pour Some Sugar On Me" came very close on Billboard, but Richard Marx beat them to the punch (almost exactly sixteen years ago) with "Hold Onto The Nights", which IMO is a much better song, so no biggie. I still go with "Look Away" as #1 of 1988. And I already know my pick for 1987 too. But until Duck Head posts that year, the secret is still my own...

I wonder how many years it affected the # 1 song. Was "Waiting For A Girl Like You" # 1 in 1981 instead of R&R's top song, "Bette Davis Eyes"? I know Foreigner had 6 weeks at # 1 while Kim Carnes had 5, but Foreigner came late in the year. I already know it affected 1989, "Another Day In Paradise" would take # 1 with carry-over points over "Miss You Much".

For the 1980s I did. "Waiting For A Girl Like You" only registered in the 30s for 1981 because it came too late in the year to accumulate enough points. Not sure whether or not it would have become the biggest song of 1981. I compiled a list of the Top 100 hits of the 1980s, but not sure where it is.

I chose "Kokomo" though it could as easily be "Sweet Child Of Mine" with "Roll With It" third. "Love Bites", "Pour Some Sugar On Me", "Shattered Dreams" and "When It's Love" were some other big hits that year. "Look Away" and GOMDGIMC didn't strike me as that big.
