Carly Hennessy
MCA spent $2.2 million on this talented Irish chica who missed the Michelle Branch/ Vanessa Carlton singer/songwriter wave. Her two singles "I'm Gonna Blow Your Mind" and "Beautiful You" flopped. Her debut album "Ultimate High" only sold 378 copies after 3 months of release. She was profiled in the Wall Street Journal's front page; the story is posted here. Shortly after, Carly won the Irish Meteor Award in 2003 for Best Female Artist.
Amanda Latona
Clive Davis signed this ex-BSB girlfriend to J Records within 24 hours of hearing her perform "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman" to him. The New York Times ran a malicious article about the "Building of a Post-Britney," meaning Amanda went from the next Britney to the next Shania to the next P!nk. The article was vicious and nasty; Lynn Hirschberg should be punched in the balls. Amanda released two CHR/Pop singles; the most added "Can't Take It Back" and the PeopleBase Top 5 smash "Do You Still." You can read the article
here. Her debut album was never released and she was dropped. She is currently signed to Simon Cowell's label 19 and working in the UK. Her song "Without You," written by Richard Marx, was recently recorded as a duet by Kimberley Locke and Clay Aiken.
Cherie
The New Yorker wrote an article on the then 17-year-old French artist trying to crack America. They hinted the investment is around $5 million. Atlantic Records wanted Cherie to be clean scrubbed and sing songs about love, not sex. LAVA Records' president Jason Flom was confident in finding the uptempo lead single to break Cherie and that she won't be the next Carly Hennessy or he'll be very embarassed. I guess her debut single "I'm Ready" wasn't ready and the follow-up ballad "Older Than My Years" is only going for AC adds. You can read the article here. Her debut album was released last week.

My favorite is Amanda Latona. She is a great singer and role model. She is so nice to her fans and The NY Times can kiss it for writing those mean things about Amanda! She even wrote a letter to her fans afterwards to explain that she has control over her image and music creativity and J Records respects that. Yah!
