From All Access Net News:
"WJJZ, WSNI "Movin'" On?
Makin' Whoopi In Philly
As heavily rumored for the last several weeks (NET NEWS 7/27) CLEAR CHANNEL has nuked two of its five PHILADELPHIA FMs. Smooth Jazz WJJZ and AC WSNI are both currently running a Rhythmic Hot AC format dubbed "PHILLY'S 106.1," and running promos announcing the debut of WHOOPI GOLDBERG's "Wake Up With WHOOPI" show on MONDAY morning (8/14). WSNI PD and CLEAR CHANNEL RVPP BRIAN CHECK will serve as PD of the new station. The site is active at www.phillys1061.com.
WSNI signed off with ELTON JOHN's "Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me," while WJJZ followed a classy eulogy by PD MICHAEL TOZZI with an artist montage, and DARYL HALL's solo versin of "She's Gone." The new format then debuted on both signals simultaneously (actually WSNI's running about 30 seconds ahead of WJJZ) with the BLACK EYED PEAS "Let's Get It Started."
Subsequent songs: 2 UNLIMITED "Get Ready For This," MICHAEL JACKSON "Wanna Be Startin' Something," MADONNA "Into The Groove" and WILL SMITH "Gettin' Jiggy Wit It."
Commenting on the "Wake Up With WHOOPI" morning show, CLEAR CHANNEL RVP MANUEL RODRIGUEZ said, "WHOOPI GOLDBERG is a superstar, mother and grandmother. She’s the real deal and not a phony. She is a woman who understands a woman’s life. She is a unique and compelling voice in the morning.” CHECK added, “There’s been a real void for women listening to morning radio. ‘Wake up with WHOOPI’ welcomes women back to morning radio by giving them a show they can relate to with a familiar, popular entertainer. 'Wake up with WHOOPI' will be up-beat, lively, hysterically funny, and family friendly.”
Speculation is that WSNI's 104.5 frequency will be home to a new format starting next week... possibly something with an Alternative/Rock flavor!"
From me: WSNI has had a 3.0 or lower rating four of the last five seasons. WJJZ was changed despite having a rating greater than or equal to sister CHR-Pop WIOQ for each of the last five seasons.
