This guy is so talented. Which of his singles do you like best?
I'm still deciding. I've eliminated "Volcano" but I can't choose between the other two.

I love all of his singles too! My favorite has to be The Blowers Daughter though. Love it!

I ended up voting for "The Blower's Daughter." It's use in the movie Closer was really powerful to me and makes me like the song even more.

Amen. It's really difficult for me to choose, but I'm going to go with Cannonball. It was my favorite single of 2004. Damien is just... I don't know what I'd do if I got to see him live. If some of his recordings can get me all emo, I know his live show would just break me apart! lol.

All three are just beautiful tracks, period. "O" was by far one of the best albums of 2004.
But I'll go with "The Blower's Daughter".
You see, I think "Cannonball" is his best single lyrically to date, not to mention has that nice daydreaming acoustic relaxation sound.
Meanwhile, the major plus point for "Volcano" is the exchanging of vocals. First you have Damien's, then you have Lisa Hannigan's, then they sing together in the end, and there's just something very enchanting, very sensual, about the way the vocals work together. And the cello really drives the track, though it is low-fi overall.
But "The Blower's Daughter" balances both. You have the integrity of a promising songwriter, blended with the unique blend of vocal pastels. After two verses and two choruses, written in the form of a great simple love song, all a sudden the track changes both its course and key with the eerie but beautiful 180 degree shift, beginning with Hannigan's gorgeous vocals in, "Did I say that I loathe you? Did I say that I want to leave it all behind?", followed by the haunting closure where Damien responds, "I can't take my mind off you, I can't take my mind...my mind...my mind...'til I find somebody new..."
There's just an incredible amount of dimension to this excellent single, and such poetry as well, while also keeping it simple.
Sincerely, Noah Eaton
