I think rock appeals most to guys period. Rock is great music but since rap and hip-hop have come along it's side tracked the focus on "music" in favor of the drama of rap and hip-hop. For now Rap and hip-hop are more popular than rock so whos keeping the fire for rock alive?

Rap and hip-hop are not more popular than rock. Rock always leads all other genres in album sales. Thanks for that sales fact Duckhead - I'm glad to know that. Perception, audience impressions, and airplay charts paint a DIFFERENT picture which is the reason for the poll. I want to do a series of polls and combine the results to create a mini profile of the state and direction of pop music.

Rap and hip-hop are not more popular than rock. Rock always leads all other genres in album sales. I guess that's usually the case, but over the past couple years the biggest selling albums have been from urban and rhythmic artists. Rock demographic is definitely mostly guys 18-24, though I think it depends on the artist...I'm sure in Limp Bizkit's case for example, guys 12-18 had a lot to do with their success. But yeah, on the whole, it's guys in their 20's and even older.

i voted for guys 18-24 i think teh age group was. True i think guys are more into rock music than a majority of girls. but thats coming from me ( a girl!) n i love rock music, its a shame cus i know an awful lot of girls hu look at rock music and it to be completely unfeminine. Which is stupid, rock music's great for anyone n everyone it doesnt have boundaries! which is what i love about it

I would say the target demographic are Guys 18-24 also.
When I visit schools, it seems that the main age group that listens to pop music are 9-12 year-olds. With the onset of high school, 13-15 year-olds tend to think rap music as cool. Senior students (16 onwards, both boys and girls) seem to prefer rock music. Beyond high school, more underground rock music is preferred. Of course, this is an overgeneralization.

Obviously guys in general are more into rock than girls, and late teens or 20's and beyond are more likely to be rockers than early teens or pre-teens.
I think guys are also more likely to be into hip-hop and rap than girls, but in this case, as they get older and their musical ear gets more finely tuned, they tend to get away from rap and more into real music.
Pop tends to appeal more to girls and younger boys, but less so to older guys.
Junk rock like Simple Plan, Bowling For Soup, etc. actually follows the trend of rap rather than real rock. The fact that this board tends to rate rap and junk rock much lower than the radio charts do attests to the fact that our members are more musically inclined than the average person, and the fact that radio, particularly the stations that get surveyed, is very much oriented towards children and early teens.

It seems to follow a progression of pop/country (I live in the south) in elementary school/middle school, rap and kiddie rock (Simple Plan, Good Charlotte) in high school (with perhaps a leaning towards real rock/alternative) and then as soon as college hits, all real alternative music/classic rock/underground indie type stuff.
