I am a huge fan of both bands.
I thought PPs song California, which is the theme to The OC, would be rereleased as a single., since The OC is now such a hit. I loved the song when it originally came out a few years ago, but radio didn't play it. Too bad. Then they have the song Big Brat, which is the theme song to the Sunday Night lineup on MTV, and THAT should have been released on the pop charts too. Amazing song, good hooks, etc. But still, for some reason, PP has not found a real niche on radio.
Rooney's song I'm Shakin' should have been a much bigger hit in my opinion. Their album is really catchy like that, I love every song on it. I hope eventually the word gets around to pop stations about these two amazing California pop bands, and other acts in that genre. A whole slew of acts are ignored by chr, while hip hop reigns in that market

I've heard several songs from both and I like them.
I agree, they could've released "California" now, it probably could have done as well as "I'm Shakin'".

Rooney is like a better version of Weezer. There, I said it.
Rooney kicks ass.

Rooney is amazing. I believe Stay Away is their next release. As a matter of fact I heard it on an online radio station the other day, so if thie is any info on that, it would be great, because it could bea top 10. Regardless, I really see Rooney being around for a while, and they will really hit it big with a new album next spring.

Rooney is nothing like Weezer, and nowhere near as good.
I'm not a fan of either of these bands...I think that both of them make really cheesy, cookie-cutter pop-rock that's been done a million times before. I mean, I could've written "California."

Even though I really don't like the song, I think "California" could have been bigger than "I'm Shakin'" if it were released in Fall 2003 when The O.C. was just starting. At this point, with O.C. going off the air for 5 months, the chance to release it has passed.
Everyone I know seems to like this song, except for me, and the main reason I don't like it is because I associate it with a rather bad event.
"Big Brat" is a lot less pop-friendly. "California" is Phantom Planet's most pop-friendly song by far, even moreso than the song they actually did release to pop years ago, "And So I Fall Again". "And So I Fall Again" had some pretty good add weeks, but I don't think it hit the top 50.

Rooney is nothing like Weezer, and nowhere near as good. If you can't hear similarities between Weezer and Rooney, I certainly am not going to trust your ears. I've listened to everything available from Weezer, am a big fan, and do not make statements like that lightly. Rooney is a smoother popier version, but their songs are just simply better. If you could have written "California" you wouldn't be on this message board, so spare us the whole "I could do that" garbage.

"So I Fall Again" came fairly close to the top 50, but only peaked at an estimated #54 (according to Daniel Shywaoub's book) in 1998.

I just remember every PD in Hitmakers raving about how great this song was, and then it completely fell off the face of the Earth. I thought it was a pretty decent song though. It's interesting that my first impression of them was as a very poppy band, like another Savage Garden. Few Alternative stations picked up "So I Fall Again". I was kind of suprised when Alternative stations started playing the stuff off of their next album.

I disagree with this statement. The lead singer sounds a little like a Rivers Cuomo, but I think they sound more like The Beach Boys than Weezer.

I have seen Rooney perform as opening act for Weezer, and I also know that Rooney has toured with the Strokes, and both artists seem influential in their music. But I agree, Rooney sounds like a modern Beach Boys, which could be a good thing.

Rooney were actually featured in an episode of "The OC", and are talked about from time to time. I thought that the tie-in from the show would take them higher on the charts than it did.
I think that "California" could still be a hit if it was given a release. It sounds more like a summer song than something that would do well in the winter.

I don't like either of these, so far. The only song I've heard by Rooney is "I'm Shakin'" which sounds decent (not great) but I can't get over how much a song that keeps on saying "I'm sh-sh-shaking" shouldn't have done that well on Triple A.
I've heard a few by PP and the only tolerable one IMO is "Lonely Day." "California" is probably the most cliche'd saying of the past century with half-@$$ed attempts at playing music behind it, and plus it inadvertently reminds me about how all the time I've wasted elsewhere when I could have been there. "Big Brat" is just a mess.
