What is the timespan for overnight? 73 is quite a bit of spins let alone at night. WRHT in Greenville, NC has spun her 109 times this week and most of the other day parts are single digit spins. WPST in Trenton is also significantly playing her overnight with 30 night spins with 55 total spins.

Overnight is midnight - 6am. That means 73 plays over 42 overnight hours in one week, or one play every 35 minutes for the overnight hours.

It helps her get up in the chart but are they playing her that much during the day when actually most people listen to the radio?

This isn't madness at all! At least there is a station out there who is playing a Hot AC song this many times and not a rhythmic song. Avril looks like she will reach #12 safely this week!! I think she will go top 10 and eventually every statoin will start putting her in high gear like this station is, "Don't Tell Me" is very radio-friendly and I don't know why so many stations are holding off on it.

I like Avril and all, but this looks like a case of payola.

To raise her up the charts! That's the worst spending of money I've ever seen then. At least make it worthwhile.

I think that may be true. DTM hasn't done as well as a first single should do and playing a song that much when it is clear not many are liking it...

Why would anyone waste their money payolaing in Greenville, NC?! And on overnight spins at that! Because it's cheap and it still counts airplay-wise. Stations in small markets often have trouble selling ads in the overnight hours. A lot of times, the overnight ads are just offered as bonuses to the businesses who buy daytime ads. WRHT was probably faced with a lot of empty slots in the overnight hours and had the choice of giving it away or selling it to a record company cheap. If you owned a station, which would you choose?

Thank you for explaining it.
If I was the owner I would sell the the slots too but it feels so wrong when record labels buy time to play a song.

Her gains are back to over +200 and two spots away from top 10.

What money can buy...
Promotion is one thing but actually buying timeslots for songs...Isn't supposed to be that if the song is good then it will be succesful.

Look, I hate this Avril song with a passion, but I *SERIOUSLY* doubt that is payola? *WHY* would they payola a song just to get it up in the Mediabase/R&R charts that 99 percent of the people in the world don't even know about. The impact on the Hot100 would be minimal, almost non-existent, since that chart is based on audience, not spins.

Other programmers notice Mediabase, and they're less likely to drop a song that has a +200 bullet. That in turn drives audience impression numbers up, which drives sales up, or so the record companies hope.

But since most people don't really know about any other chart besides the Hot 100, if the label can get the spins up on the Mediabase chart so that it's say, top 10 there, they can tout it as a top 10 smash in all of their promotional material, and the general public will assume that they mean top 10 on the Hot 100.

KISS in Hartford does not even play her song. In fact the other day the deejay announced that Avril was coming up after the break and it was Complicated.

I think people know about American Top 40- possibly even more than the Hot 100, as it is THE radio countdown show, and the only chart that the casual listener will ever know about- since they won't hear a Hot 100 countdown.

She gets so much airplay on some stations, and on our station, KISS in Hartford, she is not even on their playlist. Is this a Clear Channel thing? Because the other station is not Clear Channel and it's playing the song like 50 times a week.

Maybe it depends which stations they can buy time from.
Is it easier to buy time from non Clear Channel stations?

When i found out this song was goign top 10 I instantly knew this was one of the biggest cases of Payola I have seen in a while. The song is so MEDIOCURE its not even funny. They had to do somethin to save face when her single was not recieved that well by fans.

It just took a while for the song to be researched correctly which is why it's had such slow progress.
