Switchfoot - "Meant to Live": 20 weeks Black Eyed Peas - "Hey Mama": 18 weeks
I think Des'ree has the record, but how close are these two (especially Switchfoot, since their bullet is a lot healthier) to approaching the record?

I thought Switchfoot lost it's bullet at one time?

I thought Switchfoot lost it's bullet at one time? They were bulletless one Sunday morning when they were #37 I think, but they managed to get a small bullet back by the final update. That's probably what you're thinking of. Didn't "The Remedy (I Won't Worry)" go 24 weeks or something with a bullet last year? "Crazy For This Girl" by Evan and Jaron must've been bulleted for at least that long too.

What about Edwin McCain's "I'll Be"? That must have had a bullet for a long time.

What about Edwin McCain's "I'll Be"? That must have had a bullet for a long time. I think that actually lost its bullet a couple times before hitting the top 10.

Now 24 weeks for Switchfoot. It'd be something if they can extend it to 26 weeks.

Assuming (1) that Des'ree holds the record, (2) R&R took two weeks off for its year-end issues, and (3) her last week with a bullet was one of the 3 weeks in which she peaked at #7, then she had a bullet for 25, 26, or 27 weeks. If R&R took only one week off that year, then it would be 26, 27, or 28 weeks.

Technically Switchfoot has had a bullet for 29 consecutive weeks, counting the break and before they debuted, and they'll surely have a bullet tonight, which will make 30 spins. Granted, they had very few spins at the start, and it would be exceedingly difficult, if not impossible, to find out how long Des'ree or other old songs had a bullet before she entered the chart, especially if you wanted to go back when they had very few spins, which Mediabase allows you to do with songs nowadays. Also, a bullet going from 8 to 30 spins (as Switchfoot's first gain was) isn't really "significant" from a chart history standpoint, but hey, it's still a bullet. ;)
From 12/5 to 1/9: 8 30 167 418 497 519
(They had 11 spins the previous week, btw, so they didn't have a bullet on 12/5).

Although not stated explicitly in the title of the thread, I think we're talking about most consecutive weeks On Chart with a bullet.

That's not really fair though, because Des'ree will have had similar time gaining before she broke the top 50, but we had no way of tracking them....
Speaking of Des'ree, seek out Ladysmith Black Mambazo's cover of 'Ain't No Sunshine'. She does lead vocals, and it's absolutely stunning. She has the most soulfull voice.....

Des'ree is a member of Ladysmith Black Mambazo? I love their cover of the sweet chariot song.

How many weeks is it now? Surely they must have the record by now.

27 weeks on the chart, including Mediabase's update yesterday that will be the 7/16 chart. It looks like Switchfoot has a good chance at breaking a chart longevity record under the 20/20 rule considering it still is bulleted in the top 5 in its 27th week. This is its 32nd consecutive week with a bullet counting the break and weeks before it entered the chart.

Assuming they don't lose their +63 bullet over the course of the day, "MTL" marks its 28th consecutive week on chart with a bullet. They've pretty much removed all doubt that the record has either been tied or broken.

It could lose its bullet by the final update tonight. All bullets have been inflated this week because of Fourth of July weekend airplay included in last week's totals, but by Monday night, this will no longer be the case. I'm guessing it will hang on to its bullet for today's final update and then lose it tomorrow night.

They've pretty much removed all doubt that the record has either been tied or broken. As of the 10:54 AM update, their bullet has slipped to +56. It'll be close, but it seems they'll make it.

...and, as I predicted, that bullet disappeared a few hours after the final update. As of the 2:30 AM Sunday night/Monday morning update, the song is down 99 spins from last week.
