Speaking of #2 songs, does anyone have a listing of either of Rick Dees' "Number Two Hits" specials (one of them was run the weekend of May 7, 1988, the other sometime in early 1993). Yes, for those of you who just discovered Rick Dees within the past few years, Rick actually used to run interesting special shows, not just these thrown-together "request specials".

I'm assuming you guys are using R&R charts because I know some of the songs listed went to #1 on Billboard. Right, we are using R&R (hence, #1 Billboard songs like "Centerfold", "Africa", "Let's Dance" and "Islands In The Stream" included on the list). Conversely, some of the songs you listed earlier in the topic, which you said were from Billboard, were #1 R&R songs, such as "Waiting For A Girl Like You", "Dancing In The Dark" and "When The Going Gets Tough, The Tough Get Going".

What the heck? No #2's in 2003? There must've been a whole lot of #1's and #3's then.

What the heck? No #2's in 2003? There must've been a whole lot of #1's and #3's then. Yeah, there was a lot of talk about this back in 2003. It was around mid-summer that someone pointed this out and then many of us numerologists kept tabs on it, hoping that no song would peak at #2 before the end of the year. The strange thing is, a song that never hit #1 was sitting at number two on the last week of 2002, then on the first week of 2004, "Suga Suga" climbed up to number two and that's all the higher it got. So the timing was perfect. And I thought the six-month period in which no songs peaked at number two in 1985 was really something! I found that out when I was writing down the R&R charts from 1986. "John Leader's Countdown USA" was the source from which I obtained my R&R info back then, so I even wrote down the songs from the "Countdown USA Close-Up". In July, it was a big hodgepodge. I forget exactly how it went, since it's been over 18 years, but I do know that he didn't focus on one artist and it was quite hard to follow, so I just gave up and, instead, made my own Spotlight features. I'd basically write down a song from each year of the 1980s and the songs would have something in common. For one of the weeks, I did "Number Two Songs", but when I looked for number two peakers in the summer of 1985, I had trouble finding any! I looked way back to the start of June, but every song that was at number two during the three-month period that most people consider "summer", either had been or eventually would hit number one. I decided to look ahead to September since, technically, one-third (or so) of that month is summer. Phil Collins' "Don't Lose My Number" was the sole number two peak that summer, so I wrote that down, since it had at least been on the chart in August.
