Its not about quick sales is about having a lasting career....and when its all said and done I think Ruben will outlast Clay. But with all that Clay's done, one would think he'd have the better shot at a lasting career than Ruben.

I agree. People seem to already be forgetting Ruben. And Clay still seems to have that wide fanbase, whereas Ruben is simply looked at as just another male R&B singer, IMO. He's interchangable with Joe, Avant, all of them. There is something distinct about Clay that keeps his fanbase interested in supporting him. He just did the co-headlining arena tour with Kelly Clarkson and is now about to head out on his own solo tour. What did Ruben do, 3 weeks of spot dates in small auditoriums with his band? And for the young Luther Vandross comparison, many people are calling Clay the young Barry Manilow. I'm not hating on Ruben, I'm just playing the other side of the argument. I just really don't get how Simon can sit there and say "The right winner has won every year of this competition", when Ruben narrowly beat Clay by 130,000 votes, and after all this enormous success out the gate, Clay was CLEARLY more successful than Ruben, the actual winner. Simon is an ignorant prick and he can't admit when he's wrong, so he's gonna stick by his love for Ruben and never let go, until Ruben's on "Where are they now". Then Simon will be like, oh well, yea it was bad marketing.

Yep-I mean, I do not think that anyone can argue that Clay is more popular with more fans. I feel kind of bad for Ruben-even the American Idol press promoted Clay more than him, the winner I think if Clay has a shot at lasting, he should get a few Ac hits because pop obviously wont give him much of a chance.

Which is why Ruben will last longer. Ruben has a format that will play his record. Clay doesn't have that.

Do you honestly think that Ruben will continue to have HUGE hits and sales?

Simon speaks the truth 99% of the time. Get off his case and go listen to Justin, Clay and Diana because they are all definitely the most talented contestants to ever grace the AI stage.

Do you honestly think that Ruben will continue to have HUGE hits and sales? Will Clay have a HUGE HIT? and I mean without the AI hype. See Ruben can move on from AI and have a reasonably successful career...Clay is completely dependent on AI hype and its only a matter of time before that wears off....Clay has yet to find an audience for his music so he can sell for the long term.

Well I already said I do not think either will last-but Clay has massively more fans and more touring credibility. Last time I checked that is a better indication of who will last

Do you honestly think that Ruben will continue to have HUGE hits and sales? Depends on what you mean by huge. He should really lose weight, even if he's known for his fatness. He looks so unhealthy, and he's not going to live long if he doesn't lose any of his weight. It's sad.

See Ruben can move on from AI and have a reasonably successful career...Clay is completely dependent on AI hype and its only a matter of time before that wears off....Clay has yet to find an audience for his music so he can sell for the long term. That all depends on whether he ever gets a hit song to sing or not. His vocal ability is certainly good enough to get a huge hit, but if he decides to try writing his own songs, forget it. The only way Clay gets a huge hit is if he gets a hit song that suits his voice. I have a hard time imagining a ballad that would do the trick, yet it almost has to be since his voice is really more suited to AC. I could see a duet or something making it big.

Clay has a great voice...for "Rent" on Broadway. that voice..those bad songs..its a perfect match. he'll also have a chance to relax alittle....he always looks like hes thinking.."hey guys"...."Am I doing this pop star thing right?"

Is it just me? But I don't really see the big deal over Fantasia. I haven't watched the show at all much this season, but I have saw the final episode and she didn't seem that great to me.

You mean you dont worship the ground she walks on and quake in her existence? **hugs you** I think she is decent for what she is....but nothing to scream about.

I think this will be a huge record for Fantasia. It will sell like "This is the Night" and get the airplay of "A Moment Like This." Fantasia Barrino is unstoppable.

Fantasia doesn't even seem to have a personality. No offense, but she seems like a rather dry singer to me. I'm just bored by her presence. I really don't want to sound mean or anything.

Bob Dumas, host of WDGC's top-rated "Showgram", on Thursday used the term "ghetto" and "low class" to describe Barrino, who is black and had a child out of wedlock. His last name is very appropriate. :)

Which is why Ruben will last longer. Ruben has a format that will play his record. Clay doesn't have that. AC is a format, last time I checked. And probably the most stable format there is, as far as artist loyalty.

No personality? You really didn't watch the show. The judges and critics said she's the most exciting performer the show has ever had. I don't really find heed to what the AI judges (Simon, Paula, and Randy) have to say anyway. They often overexaggerate on that show to get ratings, that's why I stopped watching it. Maybe critics said something that might be truthful. I have to wait until she comes out with material then I might change my mind. I thought Kelly Clarkson and Ruben Studdard had far more excitement then whatever Fantasia brings. I don't seem to jump up and down for her style. It is just something about her, that I just can't quite seem to grasp. I'm not even sure how to describe it.

Ruben is more exciting than Fantasia? Yikes. :o I really prefer Ruben over Fantasia. Maybe because he had such a 'teddy bearish' look with such an outstanding voice. Plus at one point he wore those '205' shirts, which gave him a signature look. Fantasia sounds slightly like Michelle Williams from Destiny's Child with such a bland look and persona.

Fantasia [has] such a bland look and persona. ...oh, that reminds me, I wanted to state how I saw Big Bird walking down the street yesterday, talk about a non-recognizable character, he just faded into the crowd.

Wow at how much this thread has gone off topic.
Some of you guys need a reality check. So far, none of the winners have been huge hitmakers.
None have received a #1 Billboard hit without the help of a commercial single. None of them have managed to break the triple platinum mark. As far as top 40 radio play, Kelly Clarkson is the most successful; and she only had one #1 and a top five. Clay barely made the top 20 on CHR, and the less said about Ruben, the better. Clay and Ruben haven't really been that successful on their respective formats, either.
The fact that most of their singles are annoying, repetitive, sappy, melodramatic, etc. etc. etc. doesn't really help any of them either.
Twenty, ten, even five years down the line, if the "American Idols" are still around, maybe this "who was worthy" argument would be relevant, but probably not.
