Alright, so yesterday TheJakes showed us an article about songs getting advertising time, which equals spins for the charts. The article focused on Don't Tell Me getting lots of ad time, pushing it to the Top 10. The article also mentioned Hey Mama, Hole In The Head and First Cut Is The Deepest getting the same treatment from the record labels. Later on in the article, this... Well, I recognized "CD Preview" from the playlists of WFBC/Greenville-Spartanburg, an Entercom CHR...and a good one at that. Anyway, I did my homework and checked out a music log at the station' website... b937online.com/listingsEntry.asp?ID=120693&PT=bmusic is the link to the daily logs. Scan down the log through the overnight hours only and you'll see several "Special Programming...CD Previews" (which takes up two minutes of time) and a song under it. Here are some of the songs which are obviously getting some ad time and the resulting airplay! - Finger Eleven--One Thing - Yellowcard--Ocean Avenue - Alicia Keys--If I Ain't Got You (two CD Preview spins on WFBC on this particular night) - The Calling--Our Lives - Steriogram--Walkie Talkie Man - Kiley Dean--Who Will I Run To (I can recall seeing this one under CD Preview as it climbed up the chart) Haha...they're all BUSTED! Oh, and notice how the labels can purchase 42 spins on Entercom's 6 CHRs (WFBC, WEZB, WKSE, WXSS, KDND and WKRZ) ... 42 spins, divided by the 6 stations, equals 7 spins per station...once every night! I just find all of this very funny for some reason. And these guys aren't the only ones, either. What other songs can be proven to be pushed by ad time purchased by the labels?

From the other LA Times topic: GEEZ...what is the LA Times trying to do, expose the chart as a complete sham?? I guess it looks like they are. This is going to kill the format if they keep this up. And then they'll move to other formats. Well, they can GO TO HELL for all I care. >:(

Nice research. I guess one could assume that songs played during more expensive ad periods (during the day and evening) and in major markets are not effected by this since the record labels could not afford the airtime. Thus making an audience impression chart less ameanable to manipulation then a spin based chart.

Thus making an audience impression chart less ameanable to manipulation then a spin based chart. WFBC, WEZB, WKSE, WXSS, KDND and WKRZ are all in Top 70 markets. KDND is in Market 27 (Sacramento, the biggest market of the six) but still doesn't have good audience per spin, and I would expect WXSS Milwaukee-Racine or WKSE Buffalo-Niagara Falls to have the highest audience per spin out of those six. However, even big market stations can have bad audience per spin overnights.

Just another reason to why you can't call Matchbox Twenty's "Disease" a flop at POP, when most the songs are probably being bought anyway!! I know the "Disease" topic is in another topic but it's still funny. Usually Matchbox Twenty haft to earn it on their own , they don't even get press!!!

excellent research. I've noticed that all of those songs are in heavy rotation on our college city's CHR\POP station...that's rediculous.

LOL...I'll keep checking that playlist and see if I notice any more CD Preview, umm...beneficiaries! ;) This is all way too funny. Now I wish all the other Entercom stations had playlists like that! MORE OBSERVATIONS: WFBC is in the lead for Our Lives. How many spins in the overnight? 17! Walkie Talkie Man is getting played in 2 dayparts on KDND...nights & overnights! Oh, and on WKRZ...11 spins in the overnight there. Alicia Keys isn't off the hook...I see 37 spins for If I Ain't Got You on WKSE...16 of which are overnight. Gee I wonder where those came from? Now I need to find a way to get a full daypart breakdown for all the songs, even on the stations that might not be leading. Because I'm wondering what daypart those 9 spins for Finger Eleven on WFBC were in? Haha...

WKSE is owned by Entercom, and they do "CD Preview" during the overnight hours, usually once every hour on the hour. I listen to that station, so Im familiar with it.
