Just days after WAEZ Johnson City-Kingsport-Bristol was moved to Hot AC, KHOP Modesto/Stockton changes from Hot AC to CHR-Pop, bringing the panel back up to 124 stations.

KNEV changed to Hot AC but the panel is still at 124 because KKOB Albuquerque was added (KKOB had been a Mainstream Hit station on the extended h1m panel before but wasn't on the h1r panel R&R uses). Thanks for telling me KNEV changed formats because otherwise I wouldn't have looked to figure out what other station joined the CHR-Pop panel. I have to remember that just because there are still 124 stations doesn't mean that stations didn't join and leave the panel.

Well that little bit of switcheroo actually helped some of the "poppier" songs like Everytime, Pieces of Me, and Heaven as they gained more spins by the additions and subtractions than they lost.
So now the station panel is 124 for pop? On the Jump! chart, no song has this many reporters yet...
Also, wasn't a new Green Bay station added to the panel recently?

Does anyone think that WZPL and WSTR should be added to the chr/pop panel? WZPL is a hot AC station in Indianapolis that now has several rap and R&B songs in their top 30. WSTR has actually been playing some rap songs.
This is my first post here. I once posted on the R&R forums, and just now discovered this message board.

For Atlanta stations, is it possible that Atlanta should have three CHR/Pop stations.
WSTR, WWWQ and a CHR/Rhythmic WBTS which is more pop oriented then most rhythmics.

WBTS has songs by Britney Spears and Jessica Simpson on their playlist. I don't see any rock songs though. I guess WBTS is the rhythmic pop station that leans toward hip-hop. WWWQ is the only mainstream top 40 station in Atlanta, but WSTR seems to be moving in that direction. I've read before that WSTR used to not play any rap music, that every song they played was something that you could hear on hot AC. I wonder how regular WSTR listeners are reacting to Usher, Beyonce and Outkast?

Now on radio-info they say KKRD Wichita changed formats and may go CHR-Rhythmic.

There isn't much on KKRD's web site, just a big sign that says "The Bob and Tom Show". Maybe they're getting a new web site ready.
KSKU is a chr/pop station in Hutchinson, Kansas that can be picked up in Wichita. KSKU doesn't send a very strong signal to eastern Wichita though.

Radio and Records says there will be rhythmic-leaning CHR-Pop KZCH Channel 9-6-3 (sounds similar to Clear Channel's Detroit CHR-Pop station). Clear Channel must be challenging the popular CHR-Rhythmic station. No CHR-Pop stations other than KKRD are in the Wichita ratings.

www.100000watts.com/updates.asp?page=RADIO+NEWS+%26+UPDATESKKAT 101.9 Ogden/Salt Lake City UT ends its stunting and relaunches as hot AC/top 40 "Pop-FM." Salt Lake City-Ogden-Provo already has two CHR-Pop (and another one that recenly made the bottom of the ratings) stations and doesn't need a third one, if KKAT joins the CHR-Pop panel it would make SLC-O-P the only market with three stations on the panel. Considering that the ratings called "Cool Pop" WCPP Harrisburg-Lebanon-Carlisle a Hot AC station I wouldn't be surprised if they do the same thing for KKAT.

Which one was removed?

KKRD is now a Mainstream Hit station (they were dropped). Hopefully soon the new Wichita station and/or the Salt Lake City-Ogden-Provo station will be added to the panel.

I gather that two pop stations on the panel have flipped out of CHR/Pop.
KBRV in Dallas has gone JACK and WBZZ in Pittsburg is now rock.
Two major markets that had two CHR/Pop stations now only have one. Expect drops in spin totals over the next few days.

Yes, what happened with KRBV? They went to dead-air around 11:30 today and they started playing this odd, weird music. I'm pissed that they switched formats. It sucks.
Another question: why do radio stations switch formats? Couldn't they buy another place on the dial? Like instead of KRBV 100.3 changing formats why couldn't the format that bought the station out go to 103.1 or something where it's empty?
Thanks, Ben

Thanks, Ben In the case of KRBV, the ratings were a disaster. When you're competing against another CHR station and can only consistently garner shares in the ones, then it's time for a new format. Also, every commercial station's bread and butter is advertising and you'll get very few advertising dollars with such low ratings.

It sucks, too, because I liked KRBV a hell of a lot better than KHKS. Thanks, Ben

Basically, Jack is a station that plays a very, very wide variety of music. Sort of like a Triple A station, but this one is rock-leaning. However, they have actually played Pink--Get The Party Started!
There are a few reasons they can't just start up new stations on empty spaces on the dial (a la 103.1 in DFW as you mentioned). One of them is that you have to protect stations that are already in existence . In the case of 103.1, you have Mix 102.9 right next door, so that signal would interfere with KDMX. You basically have to watch out for stations on a nearby frequency or the same frequency if it's within a certain distance of you. Even if you find an open signal, it costs a heck of a lot of money to get a station started up there, from the applications to construction to launching the new format.

Be nice to see WKST move off the pop panel. I'd rather see them fire their idiot DJs and hire some of the ones that B94 just let go.

Based on what I just listened to, WBZZ sounded way better than WKST. WBZZ sounded like exactly what a pop station should really be while WKST is too rhythmic leaning. CHR/Pop loses a heritage station. :(

Based on what I heard, KHKS is better than KRBV. The history shows KRBV clearly had no sense of direction.

I didn't like KHKS because they were Clear Channel and they were horrible at giving new music and new artists a chance. KRBV always seemed to be ahead on new music and new artists. I didn't particularly like their DJs though. Thanks, Ben
