I'm new to this forum. I don't work in radio, and I don't even live in the US. I come from Portugal, which is a small Southern European country, with lots of sunshine and pretty girls. ;) I'm a regular music/radio fan, just having some fun. So don't take this too seriously! :)
Here we go, then! Of course you're all free to disagree. ;)
12 STONES/Far Away - Wind-Up trying to bring Paul McCoy's band back to life! (OK, obvious joke... ). This one is clearly on the Trapt path, but I think it lacks a certain something to make it the way "Headstrong" did. Anyway, Alternative radio itself is starting to ditch these bands, which can be a serious handicap for 12 Stones' success, whatever format you look at.
BEANIE SIGEL f/ CAM’RON/Wanted (On The Run) - The title couldn't be more appropriate, since he's been brushing with the law a bit too much lately. As for the song, the Bon Jovi hook can be a double-edged sword. Rhythmic will jump on this for sure. As for Pop, it’s still an enigma for me.
BRIAN MCKNIGHT/What We Do Here - "Shoulda Woulda Coulda" had a very poor reception at Rhythmic, and consequently Pop couldn't care to bother too much. It'll probably hit big on the Urban AC format, but that will be about it.
CAVIAR/On The DL - Indies have been on the prowl lately. It's good to check that, because with all these mergers between the majors, many artists will definitely need new places to call home, since being on a major is not a guarantee of success anymore. Still, it's a bit too early to predict any major moves from indie artists. Which means that songs as catchy as this one will still find some obstacles finding their way into heavy rotation, especially on Pop radio. :( But they are working hard, and the big boys better watch out for the future. :o
DEFAULT/All She Wrote - (Obvious joke warning again) Speaking of indies, TVT are clearly "wasting their time" on this one (I told you! ). The two previous singles from this album only made a dent (and a small one at that) at Hot AC, and it's not predictable that this outdated stab at Creed + American Hi-Fi + whatever faceless corporate alt.rock band of the last few years will turn things around.
FRANZ FERDINAND/Take Me Out - Now we're talking! These guys are making quite a splash here on European shores. And this song alone explains why. A bouncy beat, a catchy melody, a chorus that you'll be singing in the shower even before you start noticing it... it's got it all! Alternative is getting on this like crazy, and I think that, along with Modest Mouses's "Float On", we can have two of the most artistically satisfying hits of the Summer in tow. And watch these guys getting even bigger than Coldplay! ;)
GRETCHEN WILSON/Here For The Party - She's making it, no doubt! She has all the right skills (and especially looks! ) to be the new Shania. But maybe this is not the right song to break her into Pop radio for now. And then - as Radiohead sang - I might be wrong.
LMC vs. U2/Take Me To The Clouds - You must probably know this one was a No. 1 hit in the UK at the start of the year, duly becoming quite big in some European markets. Fusing U2's "With Or Without You" hook with Whitney Houston's "How Will I Know" first verse over a bouncy dance beat is a combination set to deliver the goods on the hits section. And with Summer getting hotter, this one may be to 2004 what DJ Sammy's take on Bryan Adams' "Heaven" was in 2002.
R. KELLY/U Saved Me - Another surefire Urban hit for the Pied Piper, since the name alone sells him in that market. As for Pop, R. Kelly is what you may call a “hit and miss”. Even when he had big songs at Rhythmic, Pop wouldn’t always embrace him whole heartedly. All added, it’s just like Beanie Siegel: an enigma. What I know is that this is definitely going to need a shorter edit.
TAMYRA GRAY/Raindrops Will Fall - With a song like this, two things will happen to her: either she will go the Guarini way, or be launching a great career for the AC market. Whatever it is, this is not a song for Pop.
TEARS FOR FEARS/Call Me Mellow - Oh yeah, this is the year for comebacks! Count 'em: Richard Marx, Morrissey, The Cure, Velvet Revolver (OK, technically not a comeback, but you get the point ) and Ma$e, with Duran Duran set for the Autumn and a bunch of other ones maybe a bit obscure to be talked about in here, like Mission Of Burma. Judging by this song, "Closest Thing To Heaven" and some samples I've heard from the official fan site, they're returning to the Beatlesque feel of their last "big" album, "The Seeds Of Love", but with an updated feel. It's good for Hot AC. I'm not seeing Pop bothering too much with this kind of stuff in 2004.
THIRD DAY/I Believe - Another Christian Rock band on the prowl for Pop success. It has the advantage of not sounding too AC, which may prove to be the Achiles heel for MercyMe in the future. Still, it's very dependable on Hot AC's response. If it goes top 10 there, maybe it can pull a Los Lonely Boys.
