Interesting. I didn't know that Canadian songs were separated by light and regular rotation. Thanks!

It's kinda interesting how your station defines "Power Rotation" as 30-35 spins, while in the states its like 100+......big difference, eh?

Thanks for posting this... it's always interesting to read, especially the Canadian songs, because most of them, I never get to hear on the radio. It's kinda interesting how your station defines "Power Rotation" as 30-35 spins, while in the states its like 100+......big difference, eh? It's a Hot AC station, though. I think in the US, power rotation on a Hot AC station are often 40-50 spins per week?

I didn't want to start another topic but maybe KelownaGuy can answer this for me, What's with C100 increasing the spins for so many of last year's songs? Is it normal? I don't even remember them played 'Buttons' at all and they rarely played 'Umbrella' after it first came out until they started playing it like 2 weeks ago. www.mmr247.com/mmrweb/AllAccess/stations.asp?c_let=CIOO-FM

Interesting info Kelowna Guy. Hope you keep posting it. Sure shows how hard it is to get a song onto a station's regular rotation. There aren't that many slots open when you consider how many thousands of songs there are out there and how many bands and artists are trying to get a break.
Can you tell me what the criteria is for getting noticed? Does it really all come down to mostly major labels having clout and getting the PD's ear? Does a song have to break into the Toronto market before it'll get noticed out in BC? Would love to hear your ideas and opinions on all this. Thanks.

Does a song have to break into the Toronto market before it'll get noticed out in BC? Would love to hear your ideas and opinions on all this. Thanks. It's a really interesting process, shok, at least from my experiences. There are some acts where you really don't question the material... they've proven themselves in the past, there's almost no need to even listen to the song before you add it. An example of this would be Maroon 5... they had a monster record, so when it came time to add "Makes Me Wonder," there's simply next to no thought. It's funny, because when Kelly Clarkson released "Never Again," I believe we were the one station in Western Canada who didn't add it the very first week out, simply because we overlooked it, and we had this pointed out to us by Sony. Meanwhile, a lot of other adds come from reps just pushing, pushing, pushing material on us. Most of that stuff comes from smaller Canadian acts; Holly McNarland and Skye Sweetnam are great examples of this. Then there's the even popular "buzz" acts. Right now, Britney Spears is totally getting played because of the sheer amount of buzz around her, and the track. There's next to no way that "Gimme More" will move up to Power rotation, and there's next to no way that it'll be around long enough and accumulate enough spins to go recurrent. It'll flat out be dropped in a few weeks. But because it had enough buzz around it, everyone knew it was out, we played it. Beyond that, most adds are simply based on chart positions based on similar stations, and national charts. If enough stations are showing interest in a track, there's really no reason for us to pass on it. Finally, audience reaction plays into things... we tested that Kanye track in our new "Mix It or Nix It" feature, and it recieved an overwhelming 100% Mix reaction, so when your audience feels that passionatly about a track, why skip out on it?

Thanks for your reply kelownaguy. Very interesting. Beyond that, most adds are simply based on chart positions based on similar stations, and national charts. If enough stations are showing interest in a track, there's really no reason for us to pass on it. See, this is what befuddles me. You say you take into consideration its chart position on a similar station but what if that similar station is waiting to see what you do? Neither of you are playing it so it never gets onto the charts! Who leads the way? Who plays it enough for it to get on the charts in the first place? Could it make a difference if one area's rep is extremely pushy and therefore the station in that area starts playing it? While the rep for another area isn't as pushy so it doesn't get on the playlist there? How can a new song get on national charts in the first place if various areas are waiting to see how it does on a national chart?? ??? Am I making any sense? LOL I understand your point about groups or people with a record of big hits getting automatic entry but I have a hypothetical question. What if a new or fairly new artist has one big hit, say Top 10 on Soundscan and Top 5 on HAC and AC. Would that be enough for the PD's to fairly automatically give their next release a few spins? Or would they be looked at as a one hit wonder and have to still work their way up like they did with their first song? Last question (for now!). What's your feeling on fans making loads of requests for songs to stations? I'm a big fan of one particular artist and their management really discouraged the fans contacting stations because they didn't want to piss the stations off with too many requests. Yet it sounds like you're saying fan contact with stations plays a big part in deciding whether the song has any buzz with the fans. Do email requests get considered or are phone calls more effective? With so many stations online now, I know I listen to various ones right across the country so is my email from another part of the country just as effective as a local one? Is there a fine line between overdoing requests and still making sure the station knows there's an interest? When is a lot too much? What's the best way of letting a station know the singer has lots of people interested? (Sorry, hope I'm not overdoing the questions! :o And thank the good lord that Britney's not going to be around all that long!! )

How can a new song get on national charts in the first place if various areas are waiting to see how it does on a national chart?? ??? Am I making any sense? LOL You're making plenty of sense. Across the country, there are stations that are your "hit makers." They usually find themselves in larger cities, like Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary, Montreal, Halifax... Those are the stations we follow. Usually, when a few of those stations jump on a new track, it's a good sign that it'll agree with our audience, too. It's a basic heirarcy of radio. The big cities are the leaders... medium markets follow their lead, and smaller markets follow their lead (or go off in a completely new direction). Personally, I've always considered myself more of a risk taker when it comes to programming. In the past, I've been known to jump on a song I feel has the ability to become huge on the format based on my own intuition and without much influence from other stations. Case in point: Amy Winehouse's "Rehab." My boss was away for a few weeks over the summer, and I was filling some minor programming duties... this included looking up new tracks. At the time, "Rehab" was at #110 on the Canadian HotAC chart, VERY low, and normally not something we'd give a second listen to, not at that time. But I had a good feeling about her, and added it to feature rotation... 3 weeks later, she blew up. At the same time, if you're waiting for a song to blow up, and you get a good feeling about it, give it a shot. That's something we've done in the past, and it's worked well for us. We decided to jump on "Black Horse and the Cherry Tree" a month or two before it really took off, simply because we liked the sound of it. GREAT decision. For relatively new artists, it's usually on a song by song basis, depending on how well it would work with your target audience. There are too many artists who end up being one-hit wonders because radio is picky, and for good reason. Much as I love Jason Mraz, there's no way I would have given "You and I Both" a regular rotation spot, simply because it wasn't on par with "The Remedy." Did I like it? Absolutely, plenty. But the sound was different, and it's almost like you needed to treat him as a whole new artist. I'd say that once an artist has 4-5 consecutive Top 10s, that's when you begin to worry less about the track. Maroon 5 is a rare case where after 3 huge singles, they just go in because of who they are and their absolutely massive history. I'll flat out say this: Absolutely nothing pisses me off than people who e-mail requests. Yes, I know it's convienient, but due to society and whatnot, a request doesn't have to be from someone who even listens to your station thanks to e-mail. There are plenty of cases of that, specifically in Canadian music, and it's one of the biggest thorns in my side. Along with all my usual duties, I'm also the assistant to the web administrator. Through that, I have access to just about all of our websites across province. I absolutely love checking out the type of songs that "people" claim to want to hear, but 2 or 3 times a year, an artist will release a song, and their entire fan group from across the country will start to bombard the station's websites with requests. Right now, we're going through this with Kalan Porter, and Skye Sweetnam. In the end, you know what e-mails are from actual fans of your radio stations, and which ones are from people who have never listened to your station. They're usually easy to spot based on what e-mail client/service they use. Local radio is about reaching your listener, and in essense, wanting them to reach back. That's why, in my opinion, a phone request carries more weight than an e-mail request. It's more immediate. It shows that you're willing to get involved personally. Sure, your request may not be lined up as one of theh next 10 to play, but it's that kind of feedback that keeps many radio stations, many announcers busy. It's reasons like this why many stations have "Mix It or Nix It" type programs, so that they can test new material, and flat out ask for a listener opinion. There's really no way to manipulate the response, certainly not the way e-mail can. Kanye West recieved every single vote to play his track, so in this case, we listened to the audience. Since then, we've had positive feedback to just about all of the tracks we've tested (the lone exception being theh latest from Daughtry), and we'll be using this information in the future to determine what songs we're willing to add. So, while I say that the listeners carry some weight as to what gets added, I'll flat out tell you that for most stations, they carry less weight when it comes to what gets added. Listeners, for the most part, determine how long a song will stay in rotation thanks to things like listener advisory panels... if the song is showing burn, then the station would likely drop the song quicker than thehy would if they were just paying attention to the charts.

It's been a couple of weeks since the last couple bunch of adds on SunFM, but there has been new music on the station thanks to our "Mix or Nix" feature. The tracks that get voted "Mix" have recieved a limited spin rotation (usually less than 5 per week) during the evening show. So, I may as well update this to reflect that.
