Sweden is proving to be fertile ground for power pop groups, from Abba to A-Teens. Add Play to that roster, as these four teenagers stormed the music world in 2002.
Play (Faye Hamlin, Anais Lameche, Rosie Munter, and Anna Sundstrand) first began to take shape in 2000. Co-manager, Laila Bagge spotted Anna Sundstrand (born 1989) in a dance school and recruited her. Also in the same school was Anais Lameche (born 1987). After hearing her sing, Bagge asked her to join Play. Auditions were held to round out the group, with over 700 hopefuls showing up; Faye Hamlin (born 1987) and Rosie Munter (born 1987) made the final cut. All the girls' backgrounds include winning talent contests and performing in musicals and films.
During a rehearsal session, the group's producer, Anders Bagge (husband of Laila Bagge), was on the phone with Sony's CEO Tommy Mottola. Mottola overheard the group in the background and asked to hear more. That led to the group signing with Columbia. The foursome worked on their debut throughout 2001, and in the fall were a part of the Aaron's (Aaron Carter) Party tour. Their self-titled debut appeared in the summer of 2002, and landed on the album charts. The group returned to the album charts in 2003, when the album Replay was released. Later in the year Janet Leon replaced Faye Hamlin. Play released Don't Stop The Music early in 2004.
