I finally heard Kelly Clarkson's soulless version of Danielle Brisebois's "Just Missed The Train" in its entirely. The very same one everyone was raving about. I have to admit, it does stand out on her album "Thankful" because it's rocky, poppy, and very easy to digest. Unfortunately for Kelly, MCA Record's $2.2 million investment Carly Hennessy took the very same song in 2001 and reincarnated herself into it, making it one of the tour-de-force show stoppers on her severely underrated debut album "Ultimate High." Trains would literally stop for Carly's version. She may have only been 17 when she recorded it, but under Brisebois's guidance, she captured the very essence of the song. It's drenched with soul. If you liked Kelly's version, take a listen to Carly's version. It may not be as radio friendly, but it has more oomph -- if that means anything at all. Its not a terrible version but it sounds a bit...cheap. I like Kelly's better.

Its not a terrible version but it sounds a bit...cheap. I wonder if this was the song they recorded at 2 a.m. with Carly wearing high heels so her voice would be more raspy.

That was a mess. I hate when singers make themselves sound like they're out of breath in an attempt to sound sexy, and the vibrato was almost as bad as Carmen Rasmusen's. If MCA invested over $2 million in Carly, no wonder the music industry is having so many problems.

^ She did!
Carly's version is far superior, but Kelly gets an "A" for effort.

I figured out the reason why I like Carly's version more.
You see, Carly sounds like she really "missed the train" and her one chance is gone forever.. and she's sleeping in her pain now. She's like a homeless small town girl holding a useless, one-way train ticket with an expiration date, watching her dreams leave in front of her eyes.
When Carly sings, "Oh we would've made it on time, yeah! YEAH!," I can feel she really meant she almost got there. The train was just milliseconds before her grasp. And she wanted it to jump on board so much, she would've done anything.
On the other hand, Kelly sounds like she's angry, stomping her feet, because she missed her train too. She's screaming like how someone would curse if they missed their bus. However, like that someone, the missed train is not a big deal for Kelly because another one will be coming in an hour. It's an inconvenience to miss her train, but it's not the end of the world.
Carly sounds like she prepared to sing the song by having the song incarnate into her soul. It's so creepy, it gives me chills. I can imagine her in a scene from "The Exorcist" when they try to take the song OUT of her after she's done recording.
(Post inspired by Sean's debate of who sounded more "lost" in Jaci and Delta's "Lost Without You" debate)
