I like it, but the high pitched vocal parts take it down a lot. Yeah, they make it sound little-girl sing-songy. This may grow on me.

In the beginning she sounds like what's-her-name from t.A.T.U. I dunno... it's okay.

OUCH. Piercing high pitch sound is a no-no. Picture of me after hearing this song:

They debuted this song on my local radio station today, and I can't stand it!! Even the DJs were unimpressed from Ms. Carlton. She sounds like a 12-year old in the beginning of the song. I don't see success for this song. But you never know...only time will tell.

This is good. I like it. It doesn't sound like it'll be a big hit, but it's a good song.

Hey everyone. I've been lurking around for nearly a year (this message board and the old one) and I'm finally out and posting. I really need to hear this song! I've been dying and I get here and it's already all downloaded, heh.
So, can someone please PM or repost a working link? it'd be beyond appreciated!
From a german fan board:
White Houses Crashed on the floor when I moved in This little bunk alone with some strange new friends Stay up too late, and I'm too thin We promise each other it's til the end Now we're spinning empty bottles It's the five of us With pretty eyed boys girls die to trust I can't resist the day No, I can't resist the day Jenny screams out and it's no pose When she dances she goes and goes Beer through the nose on an inside joke I'm so excited, I haven't spoke it She's so pretty and she's so sure Maybe I'm more clever than a girl like her Summer's all in bloom Summer is ending soon
It's alright and it's nice not to be so alone But I hold on to secrets in white houses
Maybe I'm a little bit over my head I come undone at the things he said He's so funny in his bright red shirt We were all in love and we all got hurt I sneak into his car's black leather seat The smell of gasoline in the summer heat Boy, we're going way too fast It's all too sweet to last
It's alright And I put myself in his hands But I hold on to secrets in white houses Love, or something ignites in my veins And I pray it never fades in white houses
My first time, hard to explain Rush of blood, ooh, and a little bit of pain On a cloudy day, it's more common than you think He's my first mistake
Maybe you were all faster than me Give it all up so easily These silly little wounds will never mend I feel so far from where I've been So I go and I will not be back here again I'm gone as the day is fading on white houses I lie, put my injuries all in the dust In my heart is the five of us In white houses
You, maybe you remember me What I gave is yours to keep In white houses In white houses In white houses
Thanks!

Hmmm...I like it, I think. She doesn't sound as "precious" as she has in the past, which is good. I can see this peaking between #11 and #15 on Pop, and doing even better on Hot AC.
It's not an "undeniable" hit, but I think it was smart to go with something that was very uptempo. It's a pretty engaging song, actually. I can see it growing on me. She's an excellent lyricist.

Yep-I think she is one of the best young lyricists out there. I love how she can be blunt in one sentence and then poetic in the next and make it all work.

This lyrics are great! I love the song! I'm not sure this where this will peak, it will start off very well though.

The song is good, not too crazy about it. Yet. I don't like how her voice has changed and she doesn't even sound like her old self at all.
Anyway, I'm wondering, whatever happened to her saying that this new album and the songs will be more raw? This doesn't sound raw to me. More like overproduced. I'm hoping that the rest of the album will be more raw and this song is just a way for her to get out back in the mainstream and catch everyone's attentions again.
PS: Does anyone know for sure if Lindsey Buckingham plays guitars on this song? I don't hear a very obvious guitar part in it.

There are a few things that should be known about Vanessa Carlton. She has a very different sound, but that is not shown through her singles. She knows what songs to release unlike most singer/songwriters out there (i.e. John Mayer, Michelle Branch, etc.). I'm sure the material on her album will be very raw, but the singles won't be.

I gotta say I'm really impressed with Vanessa. The song is really good, I don't understand why you guys don't like the "high pitched" parts, I think they are very beautiful and I'm not a Vanessa fan at all.
Plus, it takes a lot of guts to release a 1st single that has no chorus and a lot of lyrics. I really want it to be successful.
Actually, this song reminds me a bit of Five For Fighting's 100 years. It doesn't seem any similar to 1000 Miles.
Oh, and she's singing so, so, so much better, it's incredible! I think she's becoming an interesting artist, I'm looking foward to the CD.

Part of it is but overall the song is about feeling young and also the feeling of growing up and moving past the point of youth.

You dont think there is a huge mental difference betweena 15/16 year old and a 24 year old? I feel lightyears away from the person I was when I was 15/16 and Im only 20....

She is definitely older than 18. She should be....22-25.
