Do you people really think they sit there and listen to the music of the nominees? Yes, actually. That's exactly what I think most of them do. I think members of NARAS are, generally speaking, serious about their craft/livelihood, and vote accordingly. I don't vote on an election issue or race if I'm not familiar with the issue or candidates. Hell, I don't even vote on Pulse polls if I don't know the songs or artists. If I were voting on the grammies, for damn sure I'd take the time to listen to the songs I might not already be familiar with. Or, I wouldn't vote on that category at all. I have no reason whatsoever to think the professional musicians who make up NARAS would be less serious about this than I would be.

I guess most of ya'll missed Ashlee Simpson's reality show on MTV where she was shown with her Grammy ballot checking off names and saying she'd vote for such and such because they were cute.

Excuses, excuses. In a world where Bush became president because of foul play in Florida, I can see how folks would be naive enough to think all's fair in the world of Grammy voting.

I think that if sales influenced the way of voting, Some Hearts and All The Right Reasons would have been album of the year nominees...LOL

Again, do you have a source for what you are saying?? Where is YOUR proof that they actually sit there and listen to the music of all the nominees? Where is your proof that they DON'T just check off the names of veterans who have won in the past? Or that they DON'T check off the names of artists who currently have buzz going for them? Okay then!

In other words, you have absolutely no clue what you are saying. Herbie Hancock had the least buzz of them all. Pop quiz: Herbie Hancock won album of the year because: a) Because the voters got lazy and just checked off random names to fill ballots & Herbie's name just happened to come up the most times. b) Herbie Hancock is old and they gave it to him out of respect. c) The voters have something against Amy Winehouse and Kanye West and voted for Herbie Hancock because they didn't want anyone else to win. d) In the voters eyes, Herbie Hancock recorded a good album and was honored by his peers for the artistic achievement of the album. I don't have a problem with you THINKING that this happened the way you are saying but, don't keep presenting your theories as fact unless you have a source.

If you anonymously polled every single voting member, you would find that many of them voted for their peers based on name recognition and friendship.

That statement on the grammy.com site isn't a fact either. They can't physically prove what reasons voters picked who they picked. And you keep bringing up Herbie Hancock, without acknowledging that Tina Turner and Norah Jones' appearances on Herbie's album. Both Tina and Norah are Grammy darlings.

Then why didnt Norah's latest album get nominated? Tina hasn't been a grammy darling in a while. Kanye & Amy proved they are much more favored in general by NARAS this year. Kanye has won 10 grammies in the last 4 years and Amy got the biggest "pimping" during the show this year, winning 5 awards.

I have anecdotal evidence of how why Grammy voters vote the way they do - a friend who votes on these each year! lol, ok, its just one guy, but for what its worth:
I asked him why he voted the way he did, just generally, and this is what he told me. He said of course, he's excited when someone he knows personally is nominated, and he looks for the names of the people he's worked with. But when he actually votes, he tries to set that aside, and vote for the songs or albums that really are the best.
He said he can't deny that its also in the back of his mind that it would be nice if the Grammy's maintain credibility, after the Milli Vanilli disaster EVERYBODY still talks about. So he's little leery of new artists that get nominated. But if their song or album is just far and away the best of those nominated in its category, in his opinion, he won't hesitate to vote for them. Only if its a tough call will he tend to vote for the more established artist, because he knows it won't be a "fly by night" win. On the other hand, if an artist brings something new to the table, like Amy Winehouse did this year, he'll tend to vote that way.
But he said it was no contest this year for AOTY, because iho, Jonie Mitchell is just one of the finest songwriters ever, and Herbie Hancock interpreting her songs was just a no-brainer for him. "Who can hold a candle to that?" he said.
And yes, he's heard, or seeks out to hear, most of the nominees. NOT the Polka, though, haha. He said he just doesn't vote in some categories that he just has no clue about. He said he wouldn't know a good polka from a bad one anyway!
I think most Grammy voters are thoughtful like he is, and probably take that same approach. At the same time, if they've worked on the album themselves, let's face it, they vote for themselves! lol. But that's only a small percentage anyway.
Also, my guy friend told me that he thinks picking NOMINEES is where all the politics are. Songs and albums are submitted by the labels for nominations, and a lot of jockeying and behind the scenes "promoting" goes on by everyone in the industry to make sure everyone gets a slice of the pie and are represented in some way at Grammy time. How it all shakes out he has no idea. That's why, though, iho, you're more likely to see bigger sellers nominated than smaller ones, if only because you don't have as many people talking up the smaller sellers, making sure they're submitted, making sure people in the biz hear the music before they vote, etc. In that way, its definitely a popularity contest. But he thinks at actual voting time, people vote for the nominees they really think are the best that year.

Oh! One more tidbit. He said that voted for Justin Timberlake's songs this year for a couple of reasons. One, he thinks they were the best nominated in their categories. But also, he said that Timberlake's album wasn't released on a "Grammy timetable" like a lot of albums are. And he feels it was really innovative, for its genre, but that it was released too late in the cycle for that to sink in, or to be properly recognized last year in the nominations. So he was glad to have the opportunity to throw some votes JT's way this year.
Just a FYI! :)

While Kanye is a favorite in that he's won a lot, all of his wins have come from the Rap categories. So, he's more like a Rap favorite at the Grammys than an actual Grammy favorite. Voters are only allowed to vote in a set number of categories, so it's more like Kanye has support from a certain section of voters.
You can apply that to others as well (most of Beyonce's wins are in R&B/Rap).

^ Which is why I say they are Grammy favorites in their genre, but not necessarily in general. I think you have to win Record/Song/Album to be a true Gammy favorite because that means you had support from the entire industry, not just a specific section of voters.

I remember arguing with an individual about Lauryn, Alicia, Norah, Beyonce, and Amy's record of most wins by a female artist in one night, saying that Beyonce's was the least impressive considering none were in the General Field. All the other women scored at least 2 wins in the most important categories.

Michael Jackson Dropped From Grammys by Tim Cashmere - February 20 2008
Michael Jackson was dropped from the Grammy Awards last week after making a series of ridiculous demands.
The star was due to appear on the show to mark the 25th anniversary of the biggest selling album of all time, 'Thriller', but according to the New York Post, his ridiculous demands caused him to be dropped.
He wanted an award to be created for him, and presented to him (an award that nobody will ever get again), he wanted to be introduced by a special honouree and he wanted to be referred to as "The King of Pop" at least thirty times throughout the course of the show.
Jackson, who once won eight Grammys in one night in 1984, has not won an award at the ceremony since 1996 when 'Scream' won best video.
The 25th anniversary version of 'Thriller' was released on February 11 and features remixes by will.i.am, Kanye West and Fergie, as well as a previous unreleased song from the 'Thriller' sessions.

It all sounds like Michael. He did invent "King Of Pop" for himself, and he did make sure that statue of himself was made and presented that is on the HIStory cover.

Nah actually the myth about him dubbing himself the King Of Pop is false. Elizabeth Taylor was the first who referred to him as that at the 1989 Soul Train Awards.

Although she didnt win AOTY, I would probably put Amy 1st because if she had a fair chance to be eligible for 2 songwriting categories as all of the others were (expect Norah who didnt write DKW), she easily would've won Best Pop Song, giving her a 6th grammy.

No, Lauryn goes first. She should've won more than five. The woman had 11 nominations. Come on! Honestly, I don't why everyone keep saying something about a Best Pop Song (should be added or whatever) when honestly I think Song of the Year is basically Best Pop Song. There isn't a difference, imo.

How is Song of the Year the same as Best Pop Song? If so, Album of the Year should eliminate Best Pop Vocal Album and Record of the Year should eliminate all Pop Vocal Recording categories. This year, SOTY is clogged with pop songs (except for BHC) but last year a country song won, in 06 a rock song won, in 04 an R&B song won, in 02 an R&B song won, in 01 a rock song won etc. Dont Know Why and Daughters are the only pop songs released this decade that have won Song of the Year. I don't see why pop songwriters arent awarded the same way songwriters are in rock, r&b, rap, country etc.
Lauryn was massive with 11 nods but I think R&B artists always have an easier time racking up nominations. Lauryn went 5/11 whereas Amy won 5 despite only being SUBMITTED by her label for 7 categories. They could have easily sent her in to R&B Female Vocal, Traditional R&B and Urban/Alternative categories with You Know I'm No Good, Tears Dry On Their Own, Love Is A Losing Game etc and I think she would've gotten even more nominations/wins. All things said however, yeah I'd say either Amy or Lauryn Hill had the most impressive nights. Then Alicia & Norah. Then Beyonce.

I think there is a difference. Like if we said Song Of The Year is really Best Pop Song, would Album Of The Year really be Best Pop Album?
