i wonder who will be the #1 song for the year. BUAD, umbrella, irreplaceable or girlfriend? all were huge and i see them in the top 10.
also congrats to Carrie! I am glad she holds the best selling idol rank. just think how big the album wouldd be in 97! probably 12 million or so.

Under the old rules, I would say either Girlfriend or Umbrella. But under the new rules (which I assume the year-end chart will follow), Irreplaceable and Buy U A Drank could wind up top 2. By either methodology though, The Sweet Escape is a huge contender. It sold a little less than Girlfriend but had better (and more consistent) airplay.

Irreplaceable has massive sales (2M+) and massive airplay (200M+). I don't see why it wouldn't be #1.

The year end chart just follows the points that a song got that week. They won't adjust the charts from the past weeks. So we'll have a mix of the two systems. I think they have just waited though. 11 weeks isn't that far away

Irreplaceable "missed the boat" though. From a person's standpoint, it had a very successful chart run and would be a clear contender for the #1 song of the year. By the truth of the matter is that it peaked at a bad time.
First, it lost a couple of weeks due to them falling during the 2006 Billboard year, including its first week in the top 10 (not a tragic lost). But then, it fell off the earlier this year. Any sales and airplay after it went to recurrent don't count.
On the other hand, The Sweet Escape got all its weeks in the 2007 Billboard year. It sold 2 million downloads and over 2 billion total impressions. And it's still charting.

Elliott moves 81-84 with flat sales of about 9,000 and a total of 333,000. His song is all over the radio! I don't know why this is not higher. ???

Doesn't Irreplaceable have near 5 billion impressions, though?

Wait, doesn't that mean all songs that chart from now on will be missing almost 1/3 of their points due to downloads not counting twice?

Doesn't Irreplaceable have near 5 billion impressions, though? Almost 4.5 billion, according to Mediabase. But I think only about 3.2 billion of that came during the eligibility period.

Yeah, point totals will be lower now since downloads count less now.

but beyonce got those points before the new chart meaning it could retain those points while others remain the same. and she also got 700 million points in one week if you remember

FATHER AND DAUGHTER REUNION: There are only two families on Earth that can claim to have father and daughter represented simultaneously in the top 20 portion of The Billboard 200 with separate chart entries. Those families are the Sinatras and the Cyruses.
A No. 20 debut for Billy Ray Cyrus' "Home at Last" (Walt Disney) puts the patriarch of the Cyrus family in the same top 20 occupied by daughter Miley, who slips 2-4 with "Hannah Montana 2 (Soundtrack)/Meet Miley Cyrus" (Walt Disney/Hollywood).
The Sinatras first achieved a similar chart feat the week of March 26, 1966, when Nancy Sinatra's "Boots" jogged 60-14 in its third chart week, while Frank Sinatra's "September of My Years" dipped 6-9 in its 32nd chart week.

Yeah, songs peaking post-rule change are at a bit of a disadvantage with the new rule because their chart point totals will be lower. At the same time, I thought the rule change in 2005 would hurt "Let Me Love You" because a lot of its downloads weren't counted, but it still finished very high on the year-end chart.

Since SoundScan began tracking sales in 1991, there have been 16 albums that have sold 10 million or more in the U.S. Here they are, in order of greatest sales.
Shania Twain, "Come On Over" Metallica, "Metallica" Alanis Morissette, "Jagged Little Pill" Backstreet Boys, "Millennium" Soundtrack, "The Bodyguard" Santana, "Supernatural" Creed, "Human Clay" NSYNC, "No Strings Attached" Beatles, "1" Celine Dion, "Falling Into You" Britney Spears, "Baby One More Time" Norah Jones, "Come Away With Me" Hootie and the Blowfish, "Cracked Rear View" Soundtrack, "Titanic" Backstreet Boys, "Backstreet Boys" Eminem, "The Marshall Mathers LP"
"Come on Over" has sold 15.4 million while "Metallica" stands at 15 million.
Collectively, these 16 albums have sold 185,866,000

I thought Hybrid Theory sold over 10 million? I know it's been certified diamond for a while now. I thought it would have passed that mark.

20 new and re-entry songs on the Canadian Hot 100 this week.
One of the reasons is the Canadian chart is now 21 weeks old. With the same rules in place as the US chart, all songs older than 20 weeks and below #50 fall off. There are now only 8 songs left on the chart for the whole 21 weeks.
Longevity leaders for the Canadian Hot 100
8 way tie for #1 (21 weeks)
Paralyzer Finger Eleven The Sweet Escape Gwen Stefani Featuring Akon Girlfriend Avril Lavigne Chasing Cars Snow Patrol Give It To Me Timbaland Featuring Nelly Furtado & Justin Timberlake Say It Right Nelly Furtado Don't Matter Akon If Everyone Cared Nickelback

Ughhh, 2m, I thought we talked about this The Canadian chart is only 10 weeks old. The song with the greatest longevity can only have 10 weeks max (since the chart has only officially existed for 10 weeks)

Yes, we talked about it but, that doesn't mean I agreed with you.
3 songs fell from a position higher than #50, to completely off the chart. These 3 songs had a "weeks on" listing last week of 20.
If the "weeks on" were "unofficial" or not real, then these 3 songs fell quite a bit in one week by themselves.
Or perhaps they put the 20 week recurrent rule in that the US chart has and the weeks on column (as listed) counts as official
