Anybody know how many songs have reached #1 as original and a sample?
Was just checking Diddy's chart history and I'll Be Missing You used Every Breath You Take so that's one.

The ones I know of: Sampled (Original) Kris Kross' "Jump" (The Jackson 5's "I Want You Back") Biggie's "Hypnotize" (Herb Alpert's "Rise") Puffy's "I'll Be Missing You" (The Police's "Every Breath You Take") Monica's "The First Night" (Diana Ross' "Love Hangover") Will Smith's "Wild Wild West" (Stevie Wonder's "I Wish") Shaggy's "Angel" (Steve Miller's "The Joker") Gwen's "Hollaback Girl" (interpolates Queen's "Another One Bites The Dust")

I'm not even sure there were any before that because sampling in pop music was not that common before the 90's.

King did not go to #1, it went to #4. I looked at the one's pre-1990 and I didn't notice any that have sampled another #1 hit.

I was looking at the R&B peak. Then yes, I think you have the entire list.

Thanks guys! Not that many it seems..
Rihanna's SOS sampled Soft Cell's version of Tainted Love which reached #1 in the UK. It's probably the only #1 which is heavily based on a cover version of another song.

Gwen actually does say "Another One Bites The Dust" before one chorus in the song.

Gwen actually does say "Another One Bites The Dust" before one chorus in the song. By that logic, Train's "Hey Soul Sister" "interpolates" Madonna's "Like A Virgin." Using the same words as a previous song title does not mean anything. Same with the "Hold It Against Me" flap about Britney "stealing" that line from the Bellamy Brothers.

Actually the horn part in "Hollaback Girl" when she says that line is the melody for "Another One Bites The dust" as well, so it's not just simply her saying the line, therefore not the same as "Hey Soul Sister" or "Hold It Against Me".

www.billboard.com/#/news/glee-cast-tops-elvis-presley-for-most-hot-1005036732.story'Glee' Cast Tops Elvis Presley for Most Hot 100 Hits DDespite having first graced the Billboard Hot 100 song chart as recently as June 2009, the cast of the smash Fox TV series "Glee" rewrites the record for most charted songs by an act in the list's 52-year archives. The act passes music royalty on its way to chart history. With six debuts on the Hot 100 to be released tomorrow (Feb. 17) on Billboard.com, the "Glee" cast has placed 113 songs on the chart, besting Elvis Presley's 108 chart entries logged between the survey's inception in 1958 and 2003. (The King of Rock and Roll's career predates the Hot 100's launch; Presley scaled numerous Hot 100 predecessor song charts beginning in 1956). The "Glee" cast's record-shattering week contributes to an historic Hot 100. As previously reported, Lady Gaga's "Born This Way" blasts in at No. 1 to become the survey's 1,000th leading title. Following the Emmy- and Golden Globe-winning series' premiere May 19, 2009, the "Glee" ensemble arrived on the Hot 100 with its highest-charted title to-date (No. 4), a cover of Journey's 1981 rock classic "Don't Stop Believin'," the week of June 6, 2009. The act has been able to fast-track its way to Hot 100 history thanks to 20th Century Fox and Columbia Records having released multiple songs digitally following each new "Glee" episode. A remake of Katy Perry's recent Hot 100 No. 1 "Firework" represents the "Glee" cast's highest debuting title this week (No. 34). The song premiered on the Feb. 8 episode, "Silly Love Longs."

Trivia question:
Am I right in thinking that because 'I'll Be There for You' by The Rembrandts was released only as a b-side of 'This House Is Not a Home' it couldn't chart higher than #17 on Hot 100 in 1995 despite ruling the airplay chart for eight weeks? Would it have been a bigger hit if released separately?
Or was it just released late compared to the airplay peak to boost the sales of the a-side?

from what I remember, the single was released way after the airplay peaked, because they wanted everyone to buy the CD. It charted late after the height of it's popularity, debuted at 17, and then fell.

Yeah, what imbondz said is the reason for the low charting, but, spoilt, you are also correct in remembering that it was released as the b-side of "This House Is Not a Home"; in fact, that's the only reason it made the Hot 100 at all. Billboard's chart rule on which side of a single charts is that the one getting more airplay is the plug side and the other is the flip side. "I'll Be There for You" never got a commercial release, but it was the other side of "This House Is Not a Home" and, despite being released well after its airplay peak, still had more radio support, and was therefore the side charted by Billboard, with "This House Is Not a Home" listed as a tag-along flip.

Thank you guys! That wasn't really good tactics then... the albums related (Friends soundtrack and The Rembrandts' own) didn sell that much.
The song could've been a decent single seller on its own.

Adele is the tenth act to have the no. 1 and no. 2 albums simultaniously in the UK
How many time this feat has been achieved in the US and when was the last time? Michael Jackson did it in 2009 I believe so that's probably the latest
