sk Billboard is updated every week. As always, submit your questions about Billboard charts, sales and airplay, as well as general music musings, to askbb@billboard.com. Please include your first and last name, as well as your city, state and country, if outside the U.S.
TWICE IS NICE, TWICE, FOR ADELE
Dear Gary,
During the chart weeks of May 21 through June 4, 2011, and again the week of June 25, Adele sat atop the Billboard 200 album chart with "21" while "Rolling In the Deep" was No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 songs survey.
Last week, it appears that "Someone Like You" spent its final (fifth) frame atop the Hot 100 while "21" made its way back to No. 1 on the Billboard 200 for a 13th week.
I was wondering: have any other artists simultaneously led the Hot 100 with two songs from the same album while that album was No. 1 on the Billboard 200?
Thanks, as always, for your weekly notes on the charts.
Sincerely,
Brandon Meyers Lansing, Michigan
Hi Brandon,
While Adele descends on both surveys this week, she has attached her name to yet more chart history. (Notably, "Someone Like You" is the first No. 1 ballad sporting only vocals and piano accompaniment of the Hot 100's 1,009 leaders, while "Rolling in the Deep" last week became one of just 10 songs in the history of the Adult Contemporary chart to tally at least 19 weeks at No. 1).
To answer your insightful question, Adele is just the 11th act to send two songs to the Hot 100 summit while reigning on the Billboard 200 with a parent album, dating to the Aug. 17, 1963, premiere of the first Billboard 200 that consolidated stereo and mono album sales.
Here is the full list (artist, album, No. 1 songs/dates):
Bee Gees "Saturday Night Fever" soundtrack Feb. 4-25, 1978, "Stayin' Alive" March 18-May 6, 1978, "Night Fever"
Donna Summer "Bad Girls" June 16, 1979, "Hot Stuff" July 14-Aug. 4, 1979, "Bad Girls"
Michael Jackson "Thriller" March 5-April 16, 1983, "Billie Jean"
April 30-May 14, 1983, "Beat It"
Prince and the Revolution "Purple Rain" soundtrack Aug. 4, 1984, "When Doves Cry" Sept. 29-Oct. 6, 1984, "Let's Go Crazy"
Phil Collins "No Jacket Required" March 30-April 6, 1985, "One More Night" July 6, 1985, "Sussudio"
George Michael "Faith" Feb. 27-March 5, 1988, "Father Figure"
May 28-June 11, 1988, "One More Try"
Milli Vanilli "Girl You Know It's True" Sept. 23-30, 1989, "Girl I'm Gonna Miss You" Nov. 25-Dec. 2, 1989, "Blame It on the Rain"
Mariah Carey "Daydream" Oct. 21-Nov. 4, 1995, "Fantasy" Dec. 30-Jan. 13, 1996, "One Sweet Day," with Boyz II Men
Nelly "Nellyville" July 13-27, 2002, "Hot in Herre"
Aug. 31, 2002, "Dilemma," featuring Kelly Rowland
Usher "Confessions" April 10-May 8, 2004, "Yeah!," featuring Lil Jon & Ludacris May 22-June 5; June 19, 2004, "Burn"
Adele "21" May 21-June 4; June 25, 2011, "Rolling in the Deep" Nov. 5, 2011, "Someone Like You"
Adele is clearly in elite company, as all the acts above - except for Milli Vanilli - have sustained lengthy careers in the pop culture spotlight. The feat also reinforces Adele's standing as an album act capabale of selling more than just singles.
As reported in last week's "Weekly Notes" Chart Beat column, Columbia will release "Rumour Has It" as the next single from "21" to adult pop (Nov. 22), pop and adult contemporary radio. The uptempo song topped the adult alternative Triple A chart in August.
Should "Rumour" reach the Hot 100's apex and "21" concurrently return to the top of the Billboard 200, Adele would become the first artist to simultaneously top the Hot 100 and Billboard 200 with three singles from the same album.

"Someone Like You" is the first No. 1 ballad sporting only vocals and piano accompaniment of the Hot 100's 1,009 leaders I find this just incredible. In over 50 years of music, during a period where popular music is dominated by electronic dance music, the Hot 100 sees it's first #1 ballad with only piano and vocals.

Probably Janet's "Diamonds" with Herb Alpert and one of Taylor's collaborations with either John Mayer or Boys Like Girls.

I think Taylor's newest top 40 puts her alone at no. 5 for female with most top 40s as lead artist, with 32. She's behind Madonna, Aretha, Supremes, and Janet. I wonder if her popularity can sustain itself for long itself for her to be the new queen... I think she might. Her albums tend to chart an excess of tracks in very high positions, thanks to the Countdown Single strategy that the Jonas Brothers perfected back in the day.

Adele, Prince... and Vanilla Ice? The 20 Albums to Lead the Billboard 200 for 16 Weeks or More
January 19, 2012 By Gary Trust, New York
As previously reported, Adele's "21" tops the Billboard 200 album chart for a 16th week, marking the survey's longest reign since the "Titanic" soundtrack also led for 16 frames in 1998. Since the chart began appearing in each issue of Billboard magazine the week of March 24, 1956, just 20 albums have spent as many as 16 weeks at No. 1. Here is a look at the elite albums boasting the longest Billboard 200 commands in that span (a list on which Vanilla Ice ranks back-to-back with Andy Williams). Weeks at No. 1, Title, Artist, Peak Year 54, "West Side Story" soundtrack, 1962 The Leonard Bernstein/Stephen Sondheim songbook infuses the album that includes such standards as "America," "I Feel Pretty" and "Somewhere." (The figure of 54 weeks at No. 1 combines the set's time atop separate stereo and mono LP charts before the Billboard 200 became a singular ranking the week of Aug. 17, 1963). 37, "Thriller," Michael Jackson, 1983 The set that vaulted Jackson to everlasting superstar status became the first to yield seven Billboard Hot 100 top 10s. At 29-times Platinum, "Thriller" is tied with the Eagles' "Their Greatest Hits 1971-75" for the most certifications, according to the RIAA. 31, "Rumours," Fleetwood Mac, 1977 As "Wayne's World"'s Mike Myers (in character) once joked about the opus, "I think if you lived in the suburbs, they just issued it to you, man." 31, "South Pacific" soundtrack, 1958 31, "Calypso," Harry Belafonte, 1956 24, "Purple Rain," Prince and the Revolution/soundtrack, 1984 24, "Saturday Night Fever" soundtrack, 1978 An collection that defines the disco era, the soundtrack became the first of nine albums ever to generate four Hot 100 No. 1s: the Bee Gees' "How Deep Is Your Love," "Stayin' Alive" and "Night Fever" and the Bee Gees-penned Yvonne Elliman dance ballad "If I Can't Have You." 21, "Please Hammer Don't Hurt 'Em," M.C. Hammer, 1990 20, "The Bodyguard," Whitney Houston/soundtrack, 1992 20, "Blue Hawaii," Elvis Presley/soundtrack, 1961 18, "Ropin' the Wind," Garth Brooks, 1991 Brooks spearheaded country's early '90s popularity boom, thanks in part to this set that included the Country Songs No. 1 "The River" (which Scotty McCreery sang last year en route to his coronation on "American Idol"). With career U.S. album sales of 68.6 million, Brooks is the best-selling album artist dating to the 1991 advent of Nielsen SoundScan data. 18, "Dirty Dancing," soundtrack, 1987 18, "More of the Monkees," the Monkees, 1967 17, "Some Gave All," Billy Ray Cyrus, 1992 The album, which introduced the signature line-dancing anthem "Achy Breaky Heart," spent its last week at No. 1 the week of Oct. 3, 1992. A month later, Cyrus welcomed daughter Destiny Hope - aka, "Miley." 17, "Synchronicity," the Police, 1983 16, "21," Adele, 2011 Should "Set Fire to the Rain," which pushes 4-2 on the Hot 100 this week, reach No. 1 while "21" is atop the Billboard 200, the album would become the first to sport three Hot 100 toppers that reigned while their parent sets led the Billboard 200. "Rolling in the Deep" and "Someone Like You" previously dominated the Hot 100 while "21" ruled the album tally. 16, "Titanic" soundtrack, 1998 16, "To the Extreme," Vanilla Ice, 1990 16, "Days of Wine and Roses," Andy Williams, 1963 16, "The Sound of Music," original cast, 1960
