The rise of "21," thus, obliterates the mark for the longest climb to the top five since the Billboard 200 adopted SoundScan data in 1991. Here is a revised look at the albums to take the most scenic routes to the top five in that span: Weeks to Top Five, Title, Artist, Year Reached Top Five 122 weeks, "19," Adele, 2012 64 weeks, "Cocky," Kid Rock, 2003 63 weeks, "Taylor Swift," Taylor Swift, 2008 62 weeks, "O Brother, Where Art Thou?," soundtrack, 2002 62 weeks, "[Hybrid Theory]," Linkin Park, 2002 Thanks 2m, but I think you mean "19" not "21." :)

Since "We Are Young" (currently #2 on Alternative and #1 on Hot 100) and "Somebody that I Used to Know (currently #1 on Alternative and #5 on Hot 100) are both major contenders for this list, here are the songs that have topped both the Alternative Songs (or, under its earlier name, Modern Rock Tracks) Chart and the Billboard Hot 100:
-"Viva la Vida," Coldplay (2008, Hot 100 for one week, Alternative Songs for three) -"Butterfly," Crazy Town (2002, Hot 100 for two weeks, Modern Rock Tracks for two) -"How You Remind Me," Nickelback (2002, Hot 100 for two weeks, Modern Rock Tracks for 13) -"One Week," Barenaked Ladies (1998, Hot 100 for one week (lol), Modern Rock Tracks for five) -"Nothing Compares 2 U," Sinead O'Connor (1990, Hot 100 for four weeks, Modern Rock Tracks for one)

If you exclude Lil' Kim's particpation in "Lady Marmalade" I don't think any female rapper has hit #1 on the Hot 100. As a matter of fact, a lot of them ended up peaking at #2.
Eve - Let Me Blow Ya Mind/Gangsta Love Missy Elliot - Work It (for ten weeks!) Lil' Kim - Magic Stick Nicki Minaj - Bedrock (Technically)
I think I might be missing one or two.

^That "female rapper" designation is... tricky. For example, Gwen Stefani's "Hollaback Girl" is pretty clearly a rap song, but I guess it doesn't count because she isn't primarily known as a rapper...? But then, many "female rappers" are also singers too. What if Nicki Minaj hit #1 with "Turn Me On" -- she barely raps in it, all the rest is singing?

That would still count because she's primarily a rapper, as much as her recent singles don't what you to think that. I don't really think "Hollaback Girl" is a rap song, and she hasn't really done a song like that since, so she's no rapper. ;)

Fergie is a rapper whether you want to accept it or not. Just because she mostly sings doesn't negate the fact that she raps as well. She's clearly rapping on "London Bridge," "Glamorous," "Imma Be," and "Fergalicious" (though that didn't hit number 1). Kesha is also a female rapper and she hit number 1 with "Tik Tok." Going back much further, TLC had several number 1's with rapping being a main feature of the song.

So it seems that the distinction here is "song by a female rapper" vs. "rap song by a female pop artist"

It's worth noting that the first #1 song featuring rapping was actually Blondie's "Rapture" which had Debbie Harry rapping. Madonna's "Vogue" also features her rapping. I don't think today's audiences would hear either of those songs and think "rap" but if you define rapping as rhythmic, non-melodic lyrics, both qualify.

Now i could definitely side with "Rapture" as a rap song than any Fergie song, because that was the intention of the song. I don't think Fergie intends to be known as a rapper or considers her songs "rap songs". Eventhough Fergie "raps" in some of her songs, most people wouldn't think of her as a rapper.

This might require a little more research, but I'm curious as to what top 5 Hot 100 songs have charted at any position on the three primary rock charts (rock songs, alternative songs, or mainstream rock charts) since, say, 2000. I know besides the above list, it would include songs like "Fireflies", "The Middle", "I Kissed a Girl", "Lose Yourself", and "This Ain't A Scene, It's An Arms Race", but that's just off the top of my head. Anyone able to come up with a complete list?

^ "The Reason" and "Use Somebody" would be on it too. I don't have time right now, but I could probably come up with a complete list tomorrow.

Anyone able to come up with a complete list? You can also include strange crossovers such as "Butterfly" (basically a rap song with a guitar rift), "Without Me", "The Real Slim Shady", "Rolling in the Deep", "Someone Like You" (I think it scratched the top 40 on one of those charts), "Set Fire to the Rain", and "Hey There Delilah". There are probably more, but those are the ones that really caught my eye.

www.billboard.com/#/column/chartbeat/weekly-chart-notes-kimbra-one-direction-1006968752.story?page=2LIGHTS' UP: In its 19th week on the Hot 100, Ellie Goulding's "Lights" shines in the chart's top 40 at last. The song rises 49-40, aided by a 32-28 lift on Digital Songs and a No. 69 debut on Radio Songs. In its eighth week on Pop Songs, it pushes 24-22. The steady ascent of "Lights" to the Hot 100's top 40 is the third-longest by a woman in one chart run. Here is a look at the songs by female artists to take the most scenic routes to the region over one release cycle:Weeks to Top 40, Title, Artist (Peak Pos.) 24 weeks, "Don't Know Why," Norah Jones (No. 30) 23 weeks, "Suddenly I See," KT Tunstall (No. 21) 19, weeks, "Lights," Ellie Goulding (No. 40 to date) 19 weeks, "La Tortura," Shakira featuring Alejandro Sanz (No. 23) Including songs by women that have spent more time climbing to the top 40 over two releases, LeAnn Rimes' "Can't Fight the Moonlight" (2002) required 29 weeks to crash the barrier. The song remains tied with 2 Unlimited's "Get Ready for This" for the longest journey to the Hot 100's top 40, the latter track having done so in one chart run.

The following are the lowest-selling number one albums in history. Any updated numbers on these albums would be super appreciated.
(2010): Sugarland Live on the Inside 267,000+ (but blocked by MJ's "#1s" on Comprehensive Albums) Glee Cast Power of Madonna EP 307,000
(2011): Cake Showroom of Compassion 98,884+ during chart run The Decemberists The King is Dead 190,015+ during chart run Amos Lee Mission Bell 85,198+ during chart run Game The R.E.D Album 206,000 during chart run
(2012): Adam Lambert Trespassing 134,754 so far
Among albums that are no longer considered current, the 'winner' is Sugarland's Live on the Inside, which has sales of 267k but never hit #1 on Comprehensive Albums (it was blocked by Michael Jackson's Number Ones). For those of us who don't think it counts, Glee Cast's The Power of Madonna (307k) holds the title.

^I feel like Rihanna is going to challenge Madonna eventually. And at that point I think it'd be helpful to break out solo/lead top tens.
SOLO TOP TENS (no featured artists): Madonna: 36 Rihanna: 12*
LEAD TOP TENS (with featured artists): Madonna: 2 Rihanna: 6
FEATURED TOP TENS (a featured artist with someone else as lead artist): Madonna: 0 Rihanna: 5
*includes S&M even though it briefly charted as featuring Britney (decided that since it did have weeks in the top ten as a solo entry it should count here)

Records can be anything depending on how it is stated. I am not sure who has the record for top 3 on the digital songs chart but another way to state Rihanna's number is 14 appearances on songs that have made the top 3. Those 14 songs have spent a total of 80 weeks in the top 3.
The 12 Taylor Swift songs have spent 14 weeks in the top 3 in total. (11 songs 1 week each, Love Story had 3 weeks)
Removing the 3 songs where Rihanna was not lead artist, that still leaves 59 weeks in the top 3.

Does anyone know who's hold the record (male & female) for the most consecutive Top 5 hits? If this hasn't been answered, here's a fun trivia to look up on. Please & thanks :)
