Lauryn Hill is the correct answer. The only other female debut albums that went #1 before her in the SoundScan era were Toni Braxton and Alanis (if she counts), but neither debuted at #1.

I misread the original wording about "DEBUT" Oops Although almost every #1 album debuts there now, pre-Soundscan, only a few of them did. Which, at least to me, makes the Whitney debut at #1 (yes it was album #2) stand out more Most definitely.

What were the albums that debuted at #1 pre-Soundscan? I think there were only 5 or so. Whitney was the only woman, right?
Edit: never mind. I found them
1. Elton John - Captain Fantastic and the Dirt Brown Cowboy (1975) 2. Elton John - Rock of the Westies (1975) 3. Stevie Wonder - Songs in the Key of Life (1976) 4. Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band - Live 1975/1985 - (1986) 5. Whitney Houston - Whitney (1987) 6. Michael Jackson - Bad (1987)
Whitney's albums was so anticipated. Bruce's debut is notable because it was a box set.

Elton John is NEVER discussed here but he holds several chart records (first album to debut at #1, the longest span of yearly top 40 hits on Hot 100, the best selling single release of all time..)

www.billboard.com/#/column/chartbeat/ask-billboard-the-whitney-houston-madonna-1006230352.story?page=2Its return, however, adds it to the exclusive club of songs that have become Hot 100 top 10s in different chart runs. Here are the five such songs: "The Twist" No. 1 (one week), 1960 No. 1 (two weeks), 1962 (after its original popularity, the dance craze eventually caught on with celebrities, causing renewed interest in the song) "Monster Mash" No. 1 (two weeks), 1962 No. 10, 1973 (one of the song's multiple annual reissues) "Stand By Me" No. 4, 1961 No. 9, 1986 (re-issued alongside the movie of the same name) "Bohemian Rhapsody" No. 9, 1976 No. 2, 1992 (re-issued alongside the movie "Wayne's World") "I Will Always Love You" No. 1 (14 weeks), 1992 No. 7 (to date), 2012

Oldest solo females to hit the top 10
Madonna achieves another milestone this week: she becomes the fourth female singer to notch a Hot 100 top 10 after turning 50, along with Tina Turner ("I Don't Wanna Fight," 1993), Streisand ("I Finally Found Someone," 1996) and Cher ("Believe," 1999).

I suspect that list of two runs in the top ten will grow with the new chart rules.

'19' makes the top 10 this week in its 121st chart week - how that ranks (below)
Oldest albums measured by total chart weeks to appear in the top 10
249 1 Beatles 238 THRILLER MICHAEL JACKSON 148 SOUND OF MUSIC SOUNDTRACK 121 19 ADELE 121 WEST SIDE STORY SOUNDTRACK 114 NUMBER ONES MICHAEL JACKSON 111 COME ON OVER SHANIA TWAIN 102 PETER, PAUL & MARY PETER, PAUL & MARY 102 ALL THE RIGHT REASONS NICKELBACK 100 RAMBLIN' ROSE NAT "KING" COLE 97 NO FENCES GARTH BROOKS 96 FOREVER YOUR GIRL PAULA ABDUL 96 DOCTOR ZHIVAGO SOUNDTRACK
Note: for the purposes of this list, I am defining the 'top 10' as the 10 biggest sellers of the week (which is the way the BB200 is now) - which is why Michael Jackson is on here twice
The Thriller # of 238 weeks includes total weeks on the BB200 and catalog chart at the time of being listed as one of the 10 biggest sellers of the week
The Beatles total of 249 consists of its run on both the BB200 and Comprehensive charts

I know this is revisionist history, but do we have any sense of which of MJ's songs would've been in the Hot 100 top ten after his passing? I'm guessing at least 2-3 would've made it. But if memory serves the sales weren't quite enough to put him in #1 contention, right?

He would easily have had some 10 songs in the top 50 (over 20 in the top 100, since we're just theorizing).
But, yes, no No. 1. ("I Gotta Feeling" was smashing at the time).

It looks like RITD is set to have the record for the latest in a single chart run that a song placed in the top ten. The only other one that seems to come close is "You Were Meant for Me/Foolish Games," which came in at #10 in week 52 (it's a little iffy whether that should be counted as one chart run, but Billboard thought so).

Sorry, should be week 51 for YWMFM/FG. It may also be the latest in a song's overall chart history (not including time off the chart).

Macarena had a surge of airplay due to year-end countdowns and hit #10 in January 1997 in its 55th week. It then crashed off the chart 6 weeks later. Its total includes two chart runs though. RITD still breaks the record.

The rise of "21," thus, obliterates the mark for the longest climb to the top five since the Billboard 200 adopted SoundScan data in 1991. Here is a revised look at the albums to take the most scenic routes to the top five in that span:
Weeks to Top Five, Title, Artist, Year Reached Top Five 122 weeks, "19," Adele, 2012 64 weeks, "Cocky," Kid Rock, 2003 63 weeks, "Taylor Swift," Taylor Swift, 2008 62 weeks, "O Brother, Where Art Thou?," soundtrack, 2002 62 weeks, "[Hybrid Theory]," Linkin Park, 2002

Most recent diamond certs by RIAA
Four albums earned the honor last year from the RIAA: Elvis Presley's 1970 holiday set "Elvis' Christmas Album"; 2Pac's "Greatest Hits" (1998); and, Eminem's "The Marshall Mathers LP" (2000) and "The Eminem Show" (2002).

Elvis' discography seems so overrepresented after all those releases. I wonder which of his Christmas records actually count towards that one...

The following albums have produced a #1 single on the Hot 100, but have yet to sell 250,000 copies:
2012- fun. Some Nights "We are Young" (2 weeks) 117,313 2011- Far East Movement "Free Wired "Like a G6" (3 weeks) 178,000 2010- Taio Cruz Rokstarr "Break Your Heart" (1 week) 200,000+ 2009- Jay Sean All or Nothing "Down" (2 weeks) 150,000+
Extreme cases of "singles artists" like Jay Sean, Taio Cruz, and Far East Movement are a relatively new phenomenon, but I'm sure there will be more cases in the future.
fun. will likely have absolutely no problem passing 250k, but in the meantime they're a part of this club.
