Post your recommendations. It'll be helpful to also list down bands that sound similar to your recommendations so we can all figure out the likelihood of us liking them.
Right now I really like "Falling Slowly" by the Frames.
Or, what are you looking forward to this year? I know Bloc Party and Arcade Fire are releasing albums I'm interested to hear.
Joseph Arthur recently released an album which was pretty good.
What about The Knife or Jose Gonzalez? I like both versions of "Heartbeats".
Maybe we should create one thread in Music News for indie music and delete this forum.

why? indie music has just as much right to be exposed in the main news section as anyone else! there's at least 5 or so of us here that care! WE WILL NOT BE TREATED AS SECOND-CLASS CITIZENS!

They'll be more visible here. There are 5-hour-old topics in Music News that have already slipped to page 2.

Well, of course it will be more "visible" here, as no one ever posts something to compete with it. Meaning no one really even views this forum. The goal is to promote the acts, not to condemn them to board obscurity. ;) The threads will fare better in the main outlet.

Someone define indie music for me. I'm afraid to talk about it because oscillations might get mad at me for putting it in the wrong context or something. I don't know if I actually listen to indie music or if it's just "indie music". Someone help me. LOL!

So it's a subjective term since most of us don't know who really has control and who has really "changed" to suit the higher powers and their requests/demands.

Basically. I tend to adhere to original principles, though.

Just like the word "pop" has several meanings (pop the radio format, pop culture, pop = popular, pop the genre), so does "indie".
Some artists are on independent labels but make very mainstream-sounding music. Personally I wouldn't refer to them as indie in everyday conversation. (Definition of indie here is DIY, not on major label etc.)
Some artists can be on major labels but produce indie-sounding albums. I'd refer to them as indie. (Here, definition of indie is the sound or genre)

when you give a term too many contexts, you just kill it. >_< Indie is NEVER a sound.

It didn't use to be but when I think of indie music, I think of any artist without a major label and that have a distinct non-mainstream sound. After Jewel's Greatest Hits album, she'll technically be an indie artist but I don't know if I could ever refer to her as one. But if it's strictly defined by what backs you up, that makes me an indie artist. lol.

How many Indie fans do we have in here? It's certainly my favorite, and makes me feel better and more intelligent than all other music listeners. Pfff.

Please, boyz. I'm the indie queen of this forum. We need a best "indie poster" award next year.

Someone should post a weekly Indy Indie music chart.

I'll make a chart & that will be the only chart we need. And it will be based completely on my tastes. The only tastes anyone ever should follow.

But be prepared for me to critique it. Or, someone should get a list of all the well-known indie artists and then we can do a report card thing. Wait - Wikipedia has it right here. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_indie_rock_artists

I was right w/ you until you mentioned the W word. And indie rock isn't really conducive to the creation of a chart. You can do it if you want, though, since you paint indie portraits in very broad strokes. ;)

I used W all the time. It's just that their "lists of ____ artists" are so broad & generic, that it doesn't really do much good. I don't think anyone in this thread really needs help finding/defining indie bands, anyway.

OK. Well I ventured a little more into the world of punk pop, via random downloads.
- Cute Is What We Aim For - Spitalfield
They're both OK, better than New Found Glory. Not as good as Yellowcard, Quietdrive and even OK Go though.
Spitalfield has a song called "Novocaine". Seems to be a popular song title for emo / punk pop groups.

I recommend the Killers. Because they are so indie rock, they even wrote a song about it.

The Bravery, The Killers, and Jet. I hear those guys are fucking rock 'n roll! \m/ Oh, and the Garden State soundtrack. That's supposed to be indietastic.

How many Indie fans do we have in here? It's certainly my favorite, and makes me feel better and more intelligent than all other music listeners. Pfff. Whether you're being sarcastic or not, what turns me off the most with indie music is the elitism. I bet there's hundreds of good bands and songs I've missed out on because people are so full of themselves about it (and I know I'm never going to listen to the bands in all those street team spams). Anyway, here's stuff that I've burned lately that someone, somewhere out there may consider "indie": TV Heart Attack The Fratellis The Arctic Monkeys (although they're sort of the poster child of it now, lol) Silversun Pickups Tomi Swick Black Rebel Motorcycle Club Hurricane Cletis Kings of Leon The Shins Arcade Fire Young Love Kasabian Franz Ferdinand, Modest Mouse, The White Stripes, Death Cab For Cutie, The Strokes (see The Arctic Monkeys) Placebo Starewell Priestess Bronx Drive By Punch Hostage Life Psychostick Needles Nine Black Alps The Knife Eagles of Death Metal Deadboy and the Elephant Men Joshua's Habit She Wants Revenge Carter Administration Downtyme Rocketface Editors Giant Drag As Fast As Big City Rock Rock Kills Kid Living Things Ashes of Soma Badly Drawn Boy Madison Strays Broken Social Scene The Snitches Ambulance LTD Jet Set Satellite MC Lars Arthur Yorin Electric Frankenstein
