HITS:
THE EYES HAVE IT: Bright Eyes’ Cassadaga, the eagerly awaited new album from next Dylan Conor Oberst on his Omaha indie label Saddle Creek, is the week’s most impressive debut, with early numbers indicating it could hit the 50-60k mark, powered by big fan-site sales and a solid iTunes number. That could mean a Top 5 bow, though it'll be a very crowded field at that figure.

Conor Oberst is probably one of the most critically overrated acts of the last few years. Oh well, best of luck to him anyway.

Review: Bright Eyes' 'Cassadaga'
Bright Eyes: "Cassadaga" Producer: Mike Mogis Saddle Creek Release Date: April 10
"Cassadaga," the sixth proper full-length from Conor Oberst under the Bright Eyes moniker, is-at its core-a road album. The travels the indie superstar undertakes on these 13 country-hued tunes are chronicled in his most oblique songwriting territory to date. Cities and states are name-checked, but the imagery is more dream-like. Religion and mysticism are hinted at in "Hot Knives," where a multiguitar punch is softened by a lovely backing choir, and the violin-spiked "Four Winds." The pedal steel-livened "I Must Belong Somewhere" spells out Oberst's quest for contentment, and the orchestral flourishes of "Clairaudients (Kill or Be Killed)" flirt with clarity, mirroring a lyrical landscape that abstractly alludes to fame, war and capitalism. It's a pleasant enough, if uneven work. Indeed, "Cassadaga" takes a relatively subtle approach with its musical adornments, resulting in a surprisingly quiet, inward-looking album. -- Todd Martens

Billboard:
There are some bright spots on this week's chart, however, led by Nebraska rock troupe Bright Eyes. The band earns its best sales and charting week as "Cassadaga" bows at No. 4 with 58,000 units. The Conor Oberst-led group had previous bests with the simultaneous 2005 release of a pair of albums, "I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning" and "Digital Ash in a Digital Urn," which debuted at No. 10 and No. 15 respectively. "Wide Awake" started with 56,000 and has since moved 394,000 copies.

Guests Keeping Bright Eyes Fresh In New YorkMay 30, 2007, 11:20 AM ET Michael D. Ayers, N.Y. When you book seven nights at New York's famed Town Hall, you're bound to have some friends show up. Indeed, Bright Eyes' Conor Oberst has already wrangled Lou Reed, Rilo Kiley's Jenny Lewis and Ben Kweller for guest turns, and last night (May 29), Norah Jones and the Willies emerged three-quarters through the show to play a short set of their own. Jones and company treated the crowd to their countrified versions of "Love Me" and "I'll Never Get Out of This World Alive," before collaborating with Oberst on "We Are Nowhere and It's Now." Jones' presence seemed to revive the visibly tired Oberst. During "I Believe in Symmetry," Oberst's mic stand was accidentally knocked over, prompting him to finish the song lying down on stage. He continued to shout the lyrics into the mic while still playing the guitar. New York hasn't been the only place for collaborations on this tour. Openers Gillian Welch and David Rawlings have been contributing guitar and backing vocals during Bright Eyes' set, and a common encore has been a full band version of the Welch-penned tune, "Look At Miss Ohio." Last night's version added the Little Willies, with Jones backing on vocals, before the entire stage segued into Neil Young's "Helpless," with Welch, Jones and Oberst trading lead vocal duties. Bright Eyes continues the sold-out Town Hall run tonight.
