I have OIAM on repeat since yesterday. The only reason it's not my favorite album in her discography is that she really pushed her boundries on Aaliyah. It was a new step for her when she broght her music to the next level. In my opinion, it was bound to happen, and maybe if she was lucky enough to release at least one more album before she died the Red album would be just my 2nd favorite among her LPs, who knows...
Anyway... One in a Million is an immensely consistent body of work. It captured the moment when Aaliyah grew to her own person as an recording artist: started to make uncoventional decisions. Her image became more edgy and recognizable. It starts w/ my 2nd favorite intro (...after The Velvet Rope) Imho it's a perfect introduction because it represents everything Aaliyah is about: sass, confidence, mistique and dark sound. She's deliciously cheeky on almost every track. The album version of Hot Like Fire is my favorite version of this song, it's very sleek and soothing. It's also has one more additional verse that it's probaby my favorite. OIAM includes several signature hits, but also some hidden gems that are often overlooked: Never Givin' Up, Everything's Gonna Be Alright & Giving You More are my favorite album tracks on this LP. I didn't include Heartbroken cuz I feel like it's one of the most iconic album tracks from 1990s R&B I'm still salty it wasn't a single. The only song on OIAM album is her cover of Got To Give It Up[/i. Even though I aften include GTGIU New Remix on party playlist. OIAM version of The One I Gave My Heart To can't hold a candle to the single version when she sang her ass off, but it's harly a big deal cuz that's one of her best vocal performances ever... But I like how young and vulnerable she sounds on the OIAM version. The outro is just such a sweet gesture for the fans. Her remixes during that era are fire. Sometimes I use If Your Girl Only (New Remix) & One in a Million (The Dark Child Remix)more often than the studio versions. No Days Go By is the 1st song Aaliyah co-wrote and it's my favorite b-side from her. I wish it made the cut. I also have a soft spot for Death of Playa.
Damn, I can't believe OIM is 20 y.o. I feel so old. This is my favorite performance from OIAM era, her vocals very on point. The energy was great. It's so obvious she let go and had fun.

I didn't know there were two versions of "The One I Gave My Heart To" and I own "One In A Million". Lol I have to go back and listen to the cd. A lot of fans say "Got To Give it Up" is a little bit of a sore spot on "One In A Million". I disagree I have always loved it and it changed the tempo of the cd a bit. Back in 96 I saw a drag queen perform it and I think that's what got me to take notice of it. She was feeling Fierce. lol

Yeah, I could never picture her in Scary Movie. Trish in RMD was a perfect debut for her anyway.

Hmm, strange her uncle sounds like a shady jerk but yet has some conscious. Some I guess after greed.
Maybe he thinks now that she passed it wouldn't be right to make money off her music though he has tried to get a project off the ground. I don't know what the benefit of keeping her music off of services other than spite. He sounds very unhappy right now.

I read the article a few days ago but didn't it say he sold his stake in Aaliyah's masters to another company? So are they not allowed to put them up?

I read the article a few days ago but didn't it say he sold his stake in Aaliyah's masters to another company? So are they not allowed to put them up? He sold a stake of Background's publishing rights but they still need his permission and cooperation. I'm sure that multi-million lawsuit judgment hanging over his head is contributing to the absence of Aaliyah's music; he's got an excuse as long as Blackground's not generating income.

I read the article a few days ago but didn't it say he sold his stake in Aaliyah's masters to another company? So are they not allowed to put them up? Not quite. He sold a stake of his publishing to another company in 2012, but even that company seems to have its hands tied. (“At the time we were talking about releasing [Aaliyah's outtakes] for the 10th anniversary of her death,” says Golnar Khosrowshahi, Reservoir’s CEO. “Now it’s the 15th.”) Khosrowshahi has been able to license out some of Aaliyah's material for sampling, and getting access to Static Major's catalog has enabled her to cash in on Ginuwine's Pony. But that seems to be all that Reservoir has gotten out of it. Part of it does sound like depression got the worst of Hankerson, reading how he let Blackground slip out of relevancy soon after Aaliyah's death. But there is a part of me that believes he's just cutting off his own nose to spite his face. It doesn't seem like he's paid a dime in any of the lawsuits he's lost or settlements he's agreed to. JoJo doesn't even want to talk about it b/c she just wants to move the f**k on so that tells me she probably didn't get much more than her literal freedom. Aaliyah is his only meal ticket now, and the second he punches it everyone is going to be all over it looking for their checks. Deservedly so, but in his mind this may be all the more reason not to bother doing right by anyone...including Aaliyah. :( or what Shooter said. I swear I'm going to learn the art of brevity one of these days...

Why doesn't he simply renegotiate the settlement terms? He's sitting on a goldmine and isn't doing anything with it. The fans and her relevancy deserve better.

AALIYAH GOES UP, COMES DOWN AT ITUNES Aaliyah’s hits were posted on iTunes and Apple Music Wednesday night after years of being kept off the market. Less than 24 hours later, the out-of-print 2005 collection Ultimate was pulled off the services after peaking #4 at iTunes The tracks posted were credited to Craze Productions, a company that has had its issues with unauthorized YouTube and iTunes postings. In 2013, Aaliyah’s albums One in a Million and Aaliyah were illegally uploaded by Craze Digital, the company’s distribution arm. The albums were pulled down and the company was sued for the unauthorized posting. Since the album has been removed, it's clear Craze did not strike a deal with the owner of the masters, Aaliyah's uncle, Barry Hankerson. The songs did not appear on other streaming services. hitsdailydouble.com/news&id=304468Meh, figured it was too good to be true.

Wow. HDD predicted problems this morning and they were right. How bizarre. So the people the purchased today, do they lose access to the songs unless they downloaded it drive? I've noticed in past that if it goes out of print, you lose your rights and money. Is that still the case?

This is really sad. Sometimes I really want to slap Barry. If Aaliyah were still with us, I believe she would want her music heard and would be angry at the way this is happening not only to her fans but also to the younger generation who want to discover her work. I've always wanted her discography on vinyl but it seems like I'm never going to get that...

Barry Hankerson is in his 70s. Maybe he'll die before the 20th anniversary of her passing so SOMEBODY can take the reigns and actually re-release her catalog. I'm happy I have everything on CD.
